    Princes Highway:

Start and End points are ~500 metres from the closest co-ordinates.
    Route is ~1500m long.

    Princes Hway

I guess it's a 60kph speed cam, and uni-directional. Note the change from 80 to 60kph on the screenshots before the Clayton Road Intersection. On the reverse route the only alert was for the School Zone from the Dover Street Pre-School [final image behind spoiler].

    Lane Cove Tunnel:

Both the Start and End points are ~500 metres from the closest co-ordinates.
    Route ~1500m.
    Start point -33.79672, 151.13753. End point -33.80501, 151.15051

Thanks Neil and x-trail, great info collected! So it would look like type=08 is variable speed camera. And Neil found the elusive "school zone" alert which I don't think it's Cyclops (do you still get it when Cyclops is not loaded?) I've been reading up on school zone and it would seem that Garmin is pulling data directly from map. Some people have claimed that school zone alert are time related as well. Unless someone can give me some coords for school zone and I can find it in Cyclops, it's safe to say that Cyclops doesn't have it

    @osiris4isus

Been avoiding answering that, hoping that one of our 'Navigation Software Experts' would enlighten you. The best way to get them to post is for me to answer you with a layman's opinion. If i get it right, there'll be a deafening silence. If i get it wrong i'll be beaten up severely. So here goes:

The School Zones are not taken from the Cyclops files [as they weren't loaded] so as you suspected it is taken from data in the map, and the time is also a factor to save false alerts being generated as they are with most custom School Zone POIs. I guess that the unit is aware of a school in much the same way that it's aware of a tunnel, however it goes further by a check against the time for morning and afternoon active zones. Perhaps it's even aware of actual school days and non-school days. I'm not sure how far back this feature goes regarding model, but for sure it's available since nuvi series 2012>. I'll check some earlier models and report.
If i don't get beaten up too badly i'll post some screenshots to support my theory when i have a bit more time, and i'll check some earlier models and report on them too.

Here's the Princes Highway route SE to NW in a 3590 which displays School Zones a little differently to the 3597 on the screen only. There are no Cyclops or Custom POIs in the unit. Note that when the time is manually set to a later time in the morning the alert is not given.

The information is clearly drawn from the map and the alerts are triggered by if the unit's set time falling within the start and end times of the School Zone activity. Also works in 2xx5. 2xx0 or 37x0 yet to be tested. I haven't got it to work in a 52 or 1350 so i guess the function is not supported in xx or 1xxx's firmware and therefore probably not supported in any earlier unit firmware either, but i'll check further and also report on other units soon.

Cool, that's excellent info. Thanks Neil! I was really hoping to exact school zone alert to be used in my WinCE unit running Igo/Primo, but if the data is built into map, I don't think I can It's interesting that Cyclops advertised that they have school zone alert (even have a symbol for it)...Maybe they backed out when Garmin is pulling data from newer maps. Odd that the alert doesn't have speed. Are all school zones same speed?

Here is what Cyclops show as their school zone alert (at Garmin site)

If Garmin does have school zone alerts for certain unit (or even in newer map), it's worthwhile to buy one just to have school zone alerts. Maybe some genius can pull it from the maps in the near future.

Why do you need to pull the school zones from cyclops? Don't the american map updates come with speedcam and school zone spc files?

When configured properly primo will give the exact same time based warnings, both sound and visual.

What version of primo are you using?

On WinCE I'm currently running iGO Primo 2.4 (9.6.13.267029 - November 2012), on android it's 9.6.29.331894. Neither has school zone alerts that
    1. Is not a single point (has to be span/segment); school zone has start and end not just a single point with radius/proximity
    2. Activate/Deactivate via time of day
I never heard nor seen Igo/Primo alerts that are not a single point/poi. Only Cyclops has span/segment alerts; that is why I wanted to extract it. Do you have the spc files with school zones that does the above for US?

BTW, Igo/Primo map updates (Navteq/HERE and TeleAtlas/TomTom) seem to have road alerts (such as double-curve, railroad-crossing) but no speedcam nor school-zones.

There's always the possibility that school zones are also included in Cyclops for units where fw does not support reading them from the map. I'll do further testing as i said with older units to see if the zones show when Cyclops are loaded. If that's the case you maybe still can extract them from there.

As far as i know all AU school zones are 40kmh in built-up areas [minor roads down from 60kph, residential streets down from 50kph]; 60kph on major roads [like Princes Hway, down from 80kph]; and in some cases on major highways 80kph down from 100kph. The temporary restriction is shown in the SLI.

Here is what Cyclops show as their school zone alert (at Garmin site).......
Which would tend to support my hypothesis that they're in both map and Cyclops. I doubt they would claim to have school zones in Cyclops if they don't.

I can't get the school zones in AU to display in older units from maps alone or with Cyclops loaded.

I wonder is the cyclops ability to show school zones regional? The UK site for example definitely claims to have them included in cyclops:

    • School zones
But on AU site no school zones for AU Cyclops are claimed.

@Neil, so school-zone alert in AU via unit firmware AND map does NOT show speed limit and rely on user knowing what it is based on area? I posted pic from Garmin to show that Cyclops alert for school-zone does show speed limit.

I've checked Cyclops alert for US but did not find any evident of school-zone (shame because it's a useful alert) We know that Cyclops AU doesn't have it and you show that Cyclops UK claimed to have it. Can someone in UK verified that school-zone does exist in Cyclops?
