No, the DVD just didn't get 'read' by the RT4 CD drive. The RT4 worked fine after I tried the DVD. As you say, upgrading firmware is always a risk. I have since spoken to an experienced car electronics installer and he said updating firmware in older devices often creates big problems. Well, now I know....

The RT4 has been sent off to a repair specialist - fingers crossed it can be saved!!

My RT4 is getting repaired. It will come back to me with firmware 8.31 installed, along with latest Australian maps. I want to replace the original RT4 HDD with a 32GB CF card. This is a 'fix' many RT4 owners have done when they started having problems due to a failing original HDD in their RT4. I want to do this as preventative maintenance.
The tutorial to do this goes like this -

"You need all the items described in the first posts (a 32GB CF-card, an CF-to-IDE-converter, an IDE-to-USB reader and a Compact Flash Reader (or a multi card reader). Oh.. and it would be handy if you had an USB stick with a Live Linux version.

    1) Update the HDD to the latest version
    2) Remove the HDD and copy all the partitions to your computer
    3) Insert the CF in the RT4 and update the CF with the same CD as you updated the HDD at 1). This should make all the partitions on the CF, but without your specific car settings
    4) Remove the CF-card
    5) Start the PC with your live USB-stick (this has to do with the fact that windows only recognizes one partition on your Compact Flash Card (because it's a so called 'removable disc'.
    6) Connect the CF-card with the PC in Linux-mode and copy the stuff from the old HDD to the CF-card (make sure you copy everything to the correct partition).
    7) Put the CF-card back in the RT4 and start it up!

It should work now. Bonus is that all the music you had on your old HDD is on your new HDD too!"

So here's my question. When I copy my RT4's HDD to my laptop (with 8.31 installed and latest maps), why can't I just copy it (with the correct 4 partitions) staright to the CF card? Why does the tutorial say to first put the CF card in the RT4 and install 8.31 with the CD and then take it out and copy the HDD's contents from the laptop to it?

    Hello,

Try to update the FW 8.31 again, leave the car engine running.
Put the RT4/5 in GPS mode and accept the update.
Be patient, wait until the job is completely finished.
GPS restart several times during the operation.

Look at first post to help you, you are a video for that.

    Hello,

Update the firmware of the device is risky.
It's necessary to control the process and use of good material Verbatim CD.
Above all be patient and wait for the full update.
The CD player GPS can read errors if it has some years of use.
Try reinstalling the 8.31 version with another engraved Verbatim 4x CD ?
You can also buy from the dealer cheap for more security.

    Note :

The 'mechanical specifications' of Verbatim media are very precise, and data written to it can be read by a wide range of readers. Therefore, Verbatim discs demonstrate a high degree of compatibility between drives running at a wide range of speeds.

    Hello,

You maybe need the network diagnostic tool to solve your problem ?
This element is indicated on the original CD cover, look ak first post on first picture.

You should buy the original CD FW 8.31 to the dealer, it's very cheap.
I think the file FW 8.31 first post must be badly burned to CD.
Some peoples on a French forum have resolved this same error by this way.
