Default Viamichelin will not power up.

I have just bought a second hand ViaMichelin X980T sat nav and it will not power on.
The power led lights up and will stay on for days so assume the battery is OK and charged.
But with the lock/unlock slider either way, pressing the power on button does absolutely nothing.

Any help suggestions will be very welcome.

    Ray.

One solution that has been tested in some forums for ViaMichelin X930,950,960,970,980 to get Tom Tom working from sd[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] The kit (17.5 MB) contains the files (shell included) to be installed on an SD card (Fat32 ,not SDHC) and the instructions.
-Insert the SD into the Navigator
-Press the key "Reset" on the back and wait until the launch of TomTom
Add a TT map and activate it.

    Thanks Catymag.
But sadly I am not sure what you mean.
Do you mean uploading new maps to the SD card and seeing if the Viamichelin boots up from that?
At present I have tried powering on with and without the maps SD card in. But the screen never even illuminates.
I have tried everything I can think of to turn the unit on. But nothing, no glimmer or spark.
The battery is up as the led lights are always on. But with the lock/unlock slider in either position the power button does absolutely nothing.

I feel the problem might be with the lock and or power button.
I have pressed the 'reset' button various ways. Long, short, pressing the power button, etc.

It can be this unit doesnt have a proper software loaded, the sd software i posted, contains the full shell and may be can make it start properly from the sd.
You dont have so many alternatives so it is worth a try IMHO.

    help

    Thanks again Catymag.
Yes I'm willing to try. All I need to do is understand what to do.
I'm fairly PC literate but what you have suggested gives me more questions than answers at the moment.

As the existing SD card in the unit is only 2GB with European maps on it. Would I now need another SD card about to download the 17.5 GB onto.
Can you just explain how I would change any new SD card from SDHC to Fat32 please?

Do I just insert the new SD card in the unit and as you say press reset and wait? As pressing reset up to now has not brought any glimmer onto the screen or even made the leds flicker.

Sorry to be asking such elementary questions but would prefer to get my ducks in line first.
As it seems I need leading by the hand here. When I click the link I seem to get an add to buy a premium version. Can't see where the download is.

As for the link, scroll down and hit Download:

    x0ry14
It works as a free download, tested.

Keep the old sd as a backup and use a new one formatted FAT32, the rar contains 2 PDF, instruction and old Fastactivate for TT maps, so unpack to check the right size of the needed sd.
If it works, you can find recent Fastactivate and new maps in TT section.

Can you just explain how I would change any new SD card from SDHC to Fat32 please?
SDHC cards are another type of sd:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    your unit doesn't recognize them.

FAT32: is a formatting method for storage hard drives:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
You can simply Google these terms to understand stuffs, Google is your friend
Windows can format your new sd as FAT32.

Do I just insert the new SD card in the unit and as you say press reset and wait?
Sorry I don't have your unit, all the info I got I found in the net, read instructions included in rar from the link I posted.

    Thanks again Catymag.
Yes for the download and put the rar file onto a new SD card.
But again absolutely no response or change from the unit.
I did call some GPS repairers in UK and most had no knowledge of the Viamichelin units. But one seemed quite au fait and after asking some questions said that there must have been a reverse polarity that has fried a chip.
This is why the led lights stay on even when the power plugs are removed.

Anyway, I am very grateful for your advice and have now put the unit on a French online sale site for spares or repair.

Ok pity, I hoped someone messed up its software only.
