Default Mio Spirit 470 map updates

    Hey guys,

My uncle has this relatively old GPS device that he needs to update. What the best way to go about getting new maps installed that doesn't require spending so much on? BTW this unit does not come with an SD card and it has about 2GB of space I believe. Never been updated.

Can I just download new maps and copy them on the device or do I need to flash a software? Thank you.

Has the device ever been unlocked? What program is the device using? Mio hasn't updated their maps in years so I doubt that you can update the Mio maps without unlocking and putting on an iGO program.

Hey chas521, thanks for answering. The device has not been unlocked, it has been used as is. I believe it runs Windows CE. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] I see the latest maps are from 2015.

Anyway, I was reading that the safest way to install iGO is from an sdcard otherwise there's the risk of bricking it, but this device has none. Should I risk it? Obviously if the risk is high enough I'd rather not since I'll be forced to buy him another.

It sounds as if someone has either bought maps from the Mio Company or the device was purchased not too long ago. What you must do now is to connect the device to a computer via a USB cable to see how much space is available.

The device has 314 MB free of 1.8GB (in reality it's 2GB).
