    Default DNX9990HD navigation freezes/lags badly

I've been having issues with my DNX9990HD navigation lagging to the point of uselessness. The lag/freezes usually starts up a few minutes after I'm under way. I've tried flashing the maps to the latest, and that doesn't appear to have affected this behavior at all. The map becomes unresponsive, and even the setting menus lag out badly.

Has anyone had this issue before? If so, how did you resolve it?

Have you tried to reset the unit?

Apologies for the extremely untimely response. I got tied up trying new things, and forgot about this thread.

So, I've tried resetting the unit with the button and it seemed like it worked in the garage. But once I took the car out on the road, the lag was back. Upon boot up, the lag isn't present, but once the nav is finished initializing (ready to navigate), the lag begins. It also isn't very good at updating my position in the status bar at the bottom. It shows the street I left the neighborhood on, but it keeps displaying that the entire way to work (it is not the same street). Trying to get into the map view is extremely difficult once the lag is going. Clicking "Accept" is not responsive at all, but it will sometimes work if you are persistent.

I've updated to the latest firmware with no change. I found a post talking about the factory service menu, and made my way into there. Initially the DRAM was listed as NG in the upper right, but after resetting to factory settings, it shows as good now. Unfortunately, nav still has issues, and I've noticed that usb music playback stutters with a pretty regular frequency (every 3-5 seconds). Bluetooth streaming rarely has this stutter, and Sirius XM and the Radio are fine (maybe the amount of processing power to stream those are dramatically less).

Playing around in the service menu, I see that nav is red, and when you go through the auto test, the tone is good, clicking next drops the faceplate down (further than I knew it could) revealing an SD card slot (with no SD) and asking me to remove the SD card. The nav test fails at this point and will go no further. I'm guessing it's the internal SD, and not this slot. Obviously I can't remove it without some disassembly, but I'm wondering if it's been corrupted. Also of note, the GPS test in that menu comes back as "passed" and shows a bunch of numbers at the bottom.

Is it possible to load the Garmin software and maps onto the a SD card, and throw it in that slot and run? Will it override the internal SD? What sort of SD card is required? I'm assuming a Class 10, is there a max size that is supported?

Thanks again, and sorry again for the late, late, late response.

I have a DNX6990HD with a rear camera. If I shift into gear early in the boot sequence it will hang up on acquiring satellites and unit is super slow to the point of being useless. I either wait until start screen passes or start it in neutral so I do not pass through reverse to drive. There is something about the signal from the camera or screen change over the corrupts the startup.

I don't think that's the culprit here, since I back the car in at work, and pull straight out when I leave. My car is a manual, so it doesn't pass through reverse to get into first gear. On the way home today, it was still lagging badly, and only showing the "driving on street name" of where I left.

More testing: I stuck the maps (2015.40) on an SD card and put that in the slot behind the screen to see if it helped at all. When the nav boots up, it does say "loading maps." during the nav boot sequence, and it doesn't do that when it loaded off it's internal card. I waited until it was fully booted up before putting it in reverse and pulling out of the garage.

The map was ok until I started driving down the street, then it froze and the stuttering began. Backing out to the main nav screen (where do you want to go or map view) and clicking on the gps meter in the upper left showed that I could see a number of satellites, and that screen updated just fine. Trying to go back to the map hung with the Map view icon highlighted. So the lag seems specific to the map render. The system has the new 2.9 nav software, 2.70 American Jill voice, 2015.40 North america detail map, and 2.0 basemap.

USB music playback is fluid until the map hung, and then the stuttering began.

During all of this, I'm able to get back to the menu, or the source by clicking on the source secondary bar from nav. Getting back to nav by doing the same (from the source window) will lag badly or be ignored.

Is there a way to disable the GPS navigation on the DNX9990HD? I see that the status bar says "GPS is OFF" when booting up sometimes. If I could disable it, then the unit might playback the usb just fine until I figured out how to fix the GPS side of it. It would at least allow me to determine that that was what was causing the playback issue.

Have you tried going into the Garmin menu and look to see that only one version of the map is checked as active. I don't know of a way to turn off the Nav only, I don't think that is possible. Did it have this issue with the old firmware too

I've checked that only one map is listed.

The unit used to behave correctly, and seems to have developed this over time, but may have been introduced over a map update. I moved last year, and the street that the house is on wasn't on the old maps, so I started looking around to update the maps. I followed [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to update the internal maps and it seemed to work just fine. I don't normally use the nav very often around town, only on trips, or heading to somewhere new. So it's possible that the last map update (2015.40 NA) introduced the problem, but I can't say for sure. The maps work fine in the garage, the problem seems to be when moving.

I'm afraid I don't know how to revert the maps back to what it shipped with to test that. The updates were all one way.

Did you ever figure anything out with this? I had the same issue with my unit starting this June/July. First it would only lag when using GPS and randomly report no signal or even lock up. Now it is to the point that it will lag when moving between home menus or trying to answer the phone. I've reset it, updated the firmware and updated the maps and none of them improved the problem.
