Default How to bulk add favourites

I have got my first Garmin, it's a Nuvi 58LMT and have converted my old TomTom files to gpx. I've found however that the POI support is PC based and so useless to me as I wish to add my own custom POI's on the go to custom made categories.
So I was told the only way to do this is to use the favourites, which only holds 1000 locations.
However there's no simple way that I've found that I can add all of the current POI's from my TomTom in one go. I converted them to gpx files and added them, but in the device interface you can only add 1 favourite at a time to a category: I have about 800 :s
So I added 1 location the a category I made and then converted the gpx "current" file to an xml file. I could see the xml code that Garmin had added to that location to assign it to the category and assign a symbol to it. I then added the same code to a couple of other locations in the list using an xml editor thinking this might work. However it doesn't and I don't know why.

So, does anyone know how to bulk add TomTom POI's to Garmin favourites? Or how to alter the Garmin file so that the device actually reads it?

You can manage your favourites with free Garmin MapSource application!

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
    Launch the application:

    1. Edit -> Preferences -> Waypoints Categories
    2. You can rename any categories at page what you want to use in Nuvi as you are prefered.
    3. Open your GPX file that was Tom-Tom made.
    4. You must select on list pane your favourites for desired categories (all mouse operation as for Windows)
    5. Make right click and choose for Waypoint properties.
    6. Assign categories for favourites with checkbox. Also you can choose - Display: Symbol & Name. At last case you can choose Symbol which will be shown on your device.
    7. After managing of all favourites was performed you must save data as GPX format on PC disk.
    8. Copy file to device in GPX folder with any name but not current!
    9. Restart device and check the result.
P.S. 10. If you do not want to restore saved favourites in this file after HARD RESET of unit you must delete this temp file after successful import.

BaseCamp is a very good free Garmin application but I do not love all in one glass!

To overcome the 1000 limit and also organize your POI with custom icons, take a look at

Yeah thanks I'm familiar with this method, but hat it means is if you arrive in a location and wish to add it to a POI list you must note the location, wait til you get to a computer, load up basecamp, find the location on the map and enter it then transfer to computer. Totally barmy if you ask me.

I could simply add it as a favourite in a couple of clicks but then I can't get my hundreds of other POI's in as favourites unless I add each one manually. Another time wasting, mind numbing task. And then there's only a limit of 1000

Sadly using this method has the same drawback as my comment above. You can't simply add to your custom POI file from the device easily.

Do you try had made only 8-9 step with your GPX file in this case?
I do the same operation about thousands time because I usually get load for loading POI on competitions of any kind. Mapsource need for me only for confidence what all POI from me and other administrative member will be accepted by Garmin units.
