I don't think that I correctly understood your "Star Wars" themed post! :-) I've definitely been modifying skins to fit my needs. Minor changes, but sometimes little things make a big difference! :-)

For my uses, I never have liked the the Dimka-style skins. I like certain aspects of them, but they just try to do too much, in my opinion. I use iGo on an 800x480 device and I really dislike the overall look of the skin. Cluttered and messy come to mind - I just don't want/need all of that stuff in my cockpit screen. I realize that you can "hide" a lot of that stuff, but if you do that, then why use that particular skin to begin with? :-)

I find the overall look and design of the Kikker/Decent skins to fit my needs better. I've modified both of them to further fit my needs where needed/desired, but for the most part, they work really well as-is for my needs. Unfortunately, my WinCE 2DIN car head-unit (which is really the only device I use navigation on anymore) just doesn't support TMC of any kind (no TMC hardware support and no internet connectivity possible), so I have no use for TMC.

Like I said, to each their own - we all have different wants and needs - which is one of the reasons why the iGo family of navigation products is so great - people can customize the product to fit their needs - which is something that can't be said for other GPS packages out there - at least not on the same level.

I am still kind of interested to hear why some people like NextGen better (have not yet seen any responses from any of the folks that had previously said that they prefer it). Just kind of curious what they like better about it. Again, not trying to say that any product is better than any other - that is dependant on each persons needs - just looking for peoples opinions, that's all.

After many years of using Primo, I have just installed NextGen and it seems like a completely new program... you have to rediscover everything from scratch - definitely I don't like that!

Also, for me, the big advantage of iGO was the big coverage in maps all over the world. With NextGen you load a new map and you have to hunt around for a license - if you can find it!

Since NextGen was published, lot of things is done, that this program works fine. Many problems are solved, many settings are applied and changed.
Yesterday, I have had a possibility, to drive a little bit longer distance, then city drive.
All I have to say is: I don't like NextGen. Primo is better! Even iGO MyWay is better then NextGen!

Yeah, other than being "newer", I still don't see any benefits with NextGen. The interface doesn't even look as nice! Very "simple" looking in comparison to Primo.

I think it's architecture makes it easier on the NNG developers (with it's modular design), but I don't see any benefits for the end user.

You don't judge NextGen on its look/layout because all of that is flexible via skins (that is what makes NNG great.) You judge it on performance and capabilities. NextGen is young and skins are still evolving and problems are being fixed. Earlier release of NextGen was slow on start up and slow on running (even on devices with good CPU and memory) NextGen "new architecture" eliminates the "resolution" settings which was painful to deal with on different devices. Also the dpi settings allows high resolutions to work while iGO/Primo depend on discrete resolution data (320x240,480x272,800x480,etc...) Android devices with resolution as high as 1080p are taking over and you don't find many WinCE devices with resolution greater than 800x480; using Primo on it via 800x480 data is sad.

Certain latest release of NextGen is quick on startup, has some zippy responses and skins are getting better. The "ux" way of adding additional capabilities and not keeping skin in one file makes it difficult for people to get it working (because they mixes them up) and hard to debug (because no one know where they comes from and use for.) But then NNG didn't create NextGen for hacker to enjoy nor users to steal from; it's for their branding of different vendors they sell to. The NextGen looks and feels are designed to be similar (and somewhat bland*) across different car Nav system they are part of. When comparing keep in mind what the original default skin of iGO/Primo/NextGen looks like. Don't get confused with skins such as dimKA, Doupas or Pongo and how they change the looks (for better or worst) and what additional capabilities they provided. Compare apple with apple!

    * hard to have a "professional" look with a rainbow of colors sparkling all over

I started with iGO 3-4 years ago, with MyWay then i bought new phone and tried Primo, got satisfied. Now i got third phone (Galaxy S4) and first i installed Primo, used it couple months. My first impressions were good, but app was kinda laggy Then, today i installed NextGen, and i got surprised for app's smoothness. Everything worked like a charm, no more lagging. UI seems better to me than Primo (simpler, better organized, simple colors, no more problem with sys.txt, new features, etc...) Also, maps and everything in content folder works. So, my vote goes for NextGen

With Primo on WinCE with TTS the voices where allways missing words. Now with Nextgen everything works fine. So performance for WinCE is better with TTS.
