    Thanks for all your comments, I believe he just needed something to roughly mark his strainer posts so they are about the same distance apart from each other, he does own a gps but it's that old it only measures in miles and kilometers, not down to meters. It does not matter if it's a couple of meters out as most of the fences are internal property paddocks and not boundaries. If most gps's these days can measures in meters, even within 10 meters, it's better than within 1 km. Just need something simple if that is the case....

    Even reasonably-priced PNAs can consistently give 10 m accuracy, usually considerably better in open country with clear sky. He'd be better to get something a bit rugged and waterproof however, have a look at Garmin's handheld range:
