Default Basemap Replacement in Regional Devices without Mass Storage Mode Access.

    Preamble:

Older automotive units such as StreetPilot c3x0/26x0/27x0 and early outdoor units such as GPSMAP 60/76C(S)x and other GPSMAP's use region 3 for basemap storage. As the space available on the unit for storeage is limited, most were supplied with a Regional basemap which included reasonable detail for the market area intended for the unit, and only some very basic roads for the rest of the World.

Typically Garmin will advise that these regional basemaps are fixed and cannot be replaced with another region however that's untrue. An Americas model can be flashed with an Atlantic or Pacific basemap and vice versa. In many cases there may be insufficient space available to flash a large World basemap, however it should be possible to at least flash the regional map suitable for the area in which the unit's being used.

    Tutorials:

    1. Attached below are several basemaps in rgn file format ready to be flashed via Updater.exe to region 3 of a compatible unit. Approximate extracted sizes are shown in brackets.
    Spoiler: RAR files

Americas: 1. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] 2. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Atlantic: 1. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] 2. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Pacific: 1. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] 2. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
World: 1. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] 2. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] 3. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

To flash one of the ready-made gmapbmap.rgn files:

    • Confirm your unit is compatible BEFORE flashing
    • Take note of the basemap presently loaded to your device and check what size it is, look for a similar sized basemap for your preferred area or try a larger one if you wish
    • Extract the desired rar file to a convenient location on your PC to obtain gmapbmap.rgn & Updater.exe
    • Drag gmapbmap.rgn onto Updater.exe
    • Connect your unit to PC
    • Select the appropriate connection on Updater's GUI and press OK to flash when unit is detected (some devices will need to be connected to a power source)
    • Don't interrupt the flash or your unit may brick
    • Your current basemap will be overwritten provided the unit's region 3 has sufficient space for the new basemap

If you receive an error message such as the following from Updater.exe when trying to flash a basemap larger than your existing, then your device probably has insufficient room for the intended one and you'll need to flash a smaller map:

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

If you do receive that message, disconnect and check the device. Even though it may show the new basemap details on the start-up screen you'll still need to check if the basemap is present by zooming out on the Map screen and browsing around. Probably it's missing entirely and you'll need to flash a smaller one. [For instance: Atlantic V3 is a full basemap and at 12,816 KB may not fit on your device, however V2 is a Recreational Basemap and at 6,604 KB should fit].

    2. If you want to create an rgn file from a different basemap here's how:
    Either do (a) or (b).
    (a):
    • Change the extension name of the selected gmapbmap.img file to gmapbmap.bin
    • Open gmapbmap.bin in RGN_Tool
    • Save as gmapbmap.rgn
    • Open gmapbmap.rgn in a hex editor
    • Search for 'R' in plain text or '52 33' in hexadecimal, typically R is at offset 0x31
    • Change 33 to 03 [at offset 0x32 typically]
    • Save the changes and then flash using Updater.exe as detailed in Tutorial 1 above.

    (b):
    • Change the extension name of the selected gmapbmap.img file to gmapbmap.bin
    • Copy the following 60 byte hexstring to the PC's clipboard:
      Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Note that the above string is only correct for making an RGN to flash a basemap to region 3. If you wish to make an RGN for a detail map then look for "52 03" in the string and change "03" to the desired region, for example "0A" for region 10 (Supplementary detail map) or "31" for region 49 (Primary detail map)
    • Open gmapbmap.bin in a hex editor and paste the string at the start of the file
    • Save as gmapbmap.rgn then flash it using Updater.exe as detailed in Tutorial 1 above.

EDIT: There's an easier way, look at Post #3 for makergn.exe use to automate and simplify the process of converting an img file to an rgn file. Thanks to kunix.

DISCLAIMER: All flashing carries some risk. You alone must accept all risk and make an informed assessment as to whether you have the necessary knowledge to do the above tasks. If you don't understand or are uncomfortable doing it, don't do anything until you are.

In case of 60Csx/76Csx replacing basemap can have more impact, since region of device is recognized basing on basemap (or maybe on product number of basemap?). For example flashing American version with other basemap can unlock many more language translations unavailable in original device.

Thanks for the info Kanopus. That has big implication for some non-EN speakers using an American unit in Europe of course, but it's also relevant if someone wishes to use their Atlantic model with Americas or Pacific Basemap elsewhere and maybe loses their preferred Language support.

In the later case, could some adjustment be made to a 'non-Atlantic' basemap to fool the unit it's reading an Atlantic version? I mean by changing the map's header info or even just it's product number in GMAPTool's Join tab?

I stupidly forgot to mention in the initial post about using kunix's handy tool makergn.exe to automate creation of the rgn file with the correct region number inserted in hex.

So to eliminate having to use RGN_Tool and a hex editor, put makegn.exe and gmapbmap.bin in the same directory then make a BAT file with this text: "makergn.exe gmapbmap.rgn 3 gmapbmap.bin" but without the quotes, drop it in with the other two files, run it and gmapbmap.rgn will be created with 03 correctly inserted at offset 0x32. The input and output file names are immaterial and could be 'out.rgn' and 'in.bin' or any other convenient names. I simply find it easy to use the conventional basemap file naming consistent with the initial gmapbmap.img file name.

I couldn't find a download link in the forum index or a dedicated thread for makergn.exe [but didn't look hard] so here's its SourceForge dl link:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Also, RGN files can be made for primary and oem detail maps using region 49 & 50 respectively. Even a logo.rgn can be flashed by this method to region 16 [10 in hex]. I accidentally flashed a map to my SPc320's region 16 (yep, intended to flash it to the SD card [rgn10/0A] and overwrote 16 [hex 10] instead so lost the logo). I replaced it by modifying a nuvi3x0 logo with a custom image and flashed that. Seems to work fine:

Sorry for OTs, but does anyone know in which region supplementary detail map gmapsupp.img is stored on capable units? Logically seeing primary map is rgn49 and oem map is rgn50 it could be rgn51 but without a usb dumper to copy regions even i'm not brave [read stupid] enough to try it. EDIT: For onboard storage of the supplementary map it's still region 10 [hex 0A] in those units which support OB detail maps. Tested with SP2720.

I don't know what exactly is checked by 60/76 to find out its region of origin. One have to test.
Anyway, basemap is not so important, you can use almost any other. And I think all Garmin basemaps are rather outdated.

Agree 100% with your 2 statements regarding basemap. My purpose in posting the replacement method seems quite academic, and could even be perceived as like tilting at windmills i guess. It would have been known to advances users for some time anyway. It's quite about showing those less advanced [my peers] that Garmin's statement regarding non-replaceable basemaps is rubbish at worst and disinformation at best.

I am happy to attract interest from advanced uses like you who may like to help with my other [maybe considered quite pointless] 'hobby horse' projects such as identifying the unit region to which supp maps are flashed by Sendmap20 and MS/MI, and also using elements of other units fw such as Honda GoldWing Navi or SP27x0 to enable NT map use in SP26x0.

However, my real and immediate desire is obtaining a region USB dumper for these old units. Even in the units with a media card there are no commands in fw that i've found for rrgn etc, which was not surprising even to me of course.

Yeah, you're right G. Senior blonde moment, they are both Americas. I have no idea where i got the original file named gmapbmap_Atlantic_V4.zip which i've had for some years, i should have checked it before i did anything with it, my bad. Initial post corrected.

My friend is trying to upload Atlantic basemap into GPSMAP 60Cx (US) MTK. But this way is not working. There are not any problem with device but it was updated with Alexander SW by crazy students from one of Russian supermarket. These crazy students did not know about this SW bug. It is not available to downgrade SW after flashing and so on. So if we are trying to use MapUpdater there are no success. MapUpdater display "Erasing..." message after launch but no process be performed.

    SW is in attachment:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

My friend use only BlueChart and without lake contour on basemap his device is not usable. Any suggestion?

How are you using MU for basemap replacement?

You mean it won't downgrade the software back to standard version 4.00 even using updater.exe even if you change the software version of 029201000400.rgn to 421?

What if you use WebUpdater in command prompt? C:\Garmin\WebUpdater\WebUpdater.exe /upload_file rgn=3 path=C:\Garmin\gmapbmap.img -autorun usb /i
That method won't work on my StreetPilots but worth trying.
