    Not surprised.

Why can't you load the standard fw? If you did manage to do that you could then load the ATL basemap before re-loading the custom fw surely.

Also, have you tried loading the basemap with it's bin file combined with boot.bin as an .rgn?

Neil, my question is from "Why no?" series. You pleasantly made thread and I try to fasten a knowledge onto practise. This device was under hand. The SW is very buggy and do not work properly with data through USB in many case. It is fact and I am washing my hands. It is a pity what Garmin do not make normal SW version with Russian language support and Garmin service in Russia and other post Soviet republic is in hand of student which is sitting in supermarket under signboard: We load maps into any telephone and navi for a bottle of beer!

My translation of that 'Giomenese': "The buggy custom fw won't allow flashing via usb in many cases". [Therefore you are unable to use updater.exe to change either the fw or basemap, right?].

Before you play Pontius Pilate and wash your hands of this matter, how about try this for an experiment: The unit only allows one map in microSD named gmapsupp.img, correct? So combine the Bluechart with an Atlantic basemap using GMapTool and see if the contours show.

We did more!!! I was combining more detailed topo maps of each lake and sea and all of its is on native language in opposite of basemap. Plus we have searchable town and others. But it is not so good because on preview levels I need to see more superfluous detail which give a loading on device processor too. Whether not too for searching of vodka bottle in snow?

P.S. There are problem in this SW with communication via MS too. Programmer is very one-track minded person. My respect to them for his very-very hard work. But I love doctors. They always have a bottle of hard alcohol in the evening, aspirin drugs in the morning and good joke about my current health every time. For example, my doctor always ask me before bandaging what do I need more: hold the glass or do my work! Do you know any programmer which ask you: What do you want?

    Hope you find it.

I'm surprised that you'd think i would know any programmers, even more surprised that you'd then think they would bother to talk to me. But, yes i'd agree they don't ask that question and usually just do what they want, which is more often than not the right way incidentally. The client who knows better than the workman he employs should just do the job himself. I've had a closer look at that custom firmware, there's a mountain of work been done in it!

I had written about that! The programmer work is very hard in my honest opinion. I really understand why nothing want to be programmer in developed countries.

P.S. I have got sufficient Garmin device fleet to find my vodka bottle in any case and so do not worry about me
