I have held the top left corner of the screen without letting go during the update... even after getting this error message, is there any way to prevent it from exiting pre-boot mode?

It could be that the Flash Rom in your Nuvi is Faulty.
Try using a freshly downloaded GDC file, Maybe the file you are using to make the cure is corrupt !
Why do you want to flash cure ?

second attempt at downloading the GCD file again, unfortunately - same result
I wanted to flash the cure in case one of the files on the internal memory got corrupted or something, so that I can access the internal memory of my Garmin, backup all files to my PC, then delete all files, create a new Garmin folder, then use WebUpdater to restore other files, etc.. am I going the wrong way to fix this issue?

please tell me what is an alternative to what I am doing, that can help me get my Nuvi back to working order - I don't want to send it to Garmin to fix it, nor do I want to replace it with a new Garmin... it was working well a few days ago, then suddenly stopped.

You are going about it the right way preboot mode is the only way to flash a device if you cannot see the internal drive.
Have you tried another cable, another PC ?
Is the device 0972 Hardware ID ?
Does the Nuvi boot up at all ? Where does it fail ?

It will be able to gain preboot as you've found and confirmed by your first image. Once in preboot it should stay in it provided a flash is initiated and pressure is maintained on the screen.

it then shows "Erasing..." for approx 10 seconds ....
Definitely still in preboot and flash is established.

then shows up this error "The GARMIN device is unable to program the requested memory region. This could be due to an incompatibility between this application and the GARMIN device" .......
Either it's trying to program a nonexistent region [because totally wrong firmware used, but reading your info that's not a mistake you'd likely make], or, [more likely] one region is damaged as a result of physical flash failure. The main firmware [fw_all.bin] is held in region 14 [0x0E] and if that's the problem region the device can start but not completely boot. 20 seconds is about the time taken by 1xxx device to fully boot normally to the start-up warning message. Does loading maps message and copyright info appear on the screen in the 20 secs before it reboots?

Yes, I have tried with 2 genuine Garmin cables, and another brand new cable that works well with another Garmin device my wife uses

Is the device 0972 Hardware ID ?
Definitely is 0972 - I even checked with g7towin64 following steps from another post on this forum to verify the hardware ID from preboot

Yes, it boots up - But only shows the "GARMIN" splash screen and nothing else... remains like this for approx. 20 seconds, then turns off when not connected to the computer/charger, but if connected to the computer, it simply reboots after 20 seconds, stuck in a loop. nothing else is shown on the screen.

It does not show loading maps message and copyright info, only the "GARMIN", then reboots after 20 seconds.

Doesn't look very hopeful, but lets see if it can read from txt command in card. Extract RAR file behind spoiler to a CLEAN microSD, insert with unit fully off then connect it to a power source [not PC usb].
    Spoiler: Click

If it shows 'Loader' on screen, wait for a while leaving it connected to power. If it dumps the two regions 41 and 14 successfully it will then try to reboot but bootloop. Disconnect from power and remove the card. In the root of the card should be two files, 'backup41.bin' and 'backup14.bin'. Please post the latter only.

Unfortunately, I have done as you suggested, turned unit completely off, copied the "Garmin" folder from the rar file using 7zip, onto a clean 8GB micro SD card, inserted into unit and plugged it into the car charger, it does not show "Loader" on the screen - same result as before, and it does not create the 2 files ('backup41.bin' and 'backup14.bin')

Is there anything else I can do with this unit? or is it a hardware fault?
