Default How to set nuvi 2012 models (MTP devices) to behave like USB disks (MASS STORAGE)

How to set nüvi 2012/13 (and newer)models (MTP devices) to behave like USB disks (MASS STORAGE)

Probably you have noticed a yellow PC icon,

    dJ5P9WR

instead of the usual white one, on your nüvi screen when attached USB to your PC: this happens coz Nüvi is in MTP mode. .System folder is not available too.
So, how to set it to Storage mode?

This post requires you to click the "LIKE this post" button and hit F5 to read this content.
    8. Start NUVI and it should recognize it is hooked up to the computer.
    9. Explorer will now see all files in ROOT directory and the .System directory.

AUTO DETECT mode can cause Error 0x8002000a with dashboard and lifetimeupdater, if you get it change to MASS STORAGE mode
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
note: to be repeated everytime you clear Non Vol in your Nuvi.

Nuvis 30/40/50 and 42/44/52/54 too, are not MTP devices

You have to navigate to get to the good.

    hi catymag,
i followed the instruction above even the pc icon on my unit is white when connected to a usb. i know i should only do this when it is showing yellow but i tried anyway and i went also to the the developers screen but it wouldn't let me scroll down to the mtp settings. on another note, i think i can see the system files alright since i have check the show all system files. only thing is, there is really no gupdate.gcd.

If you see .System folder you should find gupdate.gcd if it's present, but may be it's not present , I removed it for example

    hi cat,
i did what neil had suggested. i updated the 4.90ver of the SW via garmin site to 5.00, and now that file is already shown on the hidden folder. it wasn't really there in the first place as i suspected. wheeew. that wasn't too good for a start. i felt like i had bought a car without a spare tire on the trunk. now, on to the 2nd stage.

I now realise from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] that you have a 3790, not a 3490, so MTP setting is not present. You have probably bought a 'factory renovated' nuvi, so to all intents it's like a new unit, in that there is no gupdate.gcd present. It appears in .system after you update as i answered in the other thread and as you've now found out.

you are right neil. it is garmin refurbished unit. it is in a very pristine condition and i can say it wouldn't be mistaken as used. i decided to get this for the try and i wouldn't spend so much for a thing i may end up breaking and turning into a paperweight.... sorry for the confusion about the 3490 and 3790. my fault because i posted on the 3490 thread. but i couldn't search for anything i can quote relevant to my problem hoping the ts would acknowledge my post. well anyway, this is something i have learned today to start with. i am just so grateful i found this site with lots of nice people with hands ready to offer.
