Default City Navigators : how to with Mapupdater download

    2011.40 is out.

I was lurking in other groups. I read that if the person who downloads 2011.40 properly to the PC everything should be there.

When you perform a map update you have the option to install the maps to your PC as well. So yes, you can pre-plan the route on your PC.

Even if you opt to not install the maps to your PC, you can use BaseCamp (free download) connect your GPS and then use BaseCamp to plan your route with the map provided by the GPS.

This is somewhat slower than installing the map on your PC however. Note that the very first time you use the map from your GPS in BaseCamp it is significantly slower than the subsequent times (because we cache stuff for the following uses).

FYI do NOT delete a previous version of a map product before doing an update. The updater will only download and install it again anyway (doubling the already long download/install time). I've no idea why since, as already stated, updates are not incremental.

In these days of hundred GB drives it shouldn't be an issue having two versions of a map product on your HD temporarily.

Once you have updated maps you can then delete the previous version to free up disk space.

Edit: BTW the map updater downloads everything to the TEMP/TMP folder. For most users this is likely to be on C: along with their maps. That means you need 3x (2x as above + temp) of a map product space to perform an update. Also the data in the temp folder isn't deleted after the update--at least not the last few times I've done one. You'll therefore have to do some cleanup yourself if disk space is limited.
Catymag, can we get clarification on this please? And as already mentioned, instructions on how to view/install the 2011.40 maps on your PC just like before without the need for registry edits?

    Then

after downoading and installing you'll have the map in Mapsource, ready to send imgs to your device, alternatively you can install it on both : on pc and gps.
    Or just in gps

    catymag,

can you please clarify the instructions here. I am confused on what Garmin MapUploader does. People such as myself want to transfer or run the maps that we downloaded on Noeman onto Mapsource. This is why I created the thread in the first place and to show that the mapsource.exe file should be imbedded in the download package when you download it according to the above instructions.

Urar gmap folder, clicking on part one, it will urar all the parts .
    Copy the resulting folder in:
    (in XP - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Maps) or
    (in Vista, Windows 7 - C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Maps)
The map will be in Mapsource (last versions) without any other tweaking.
If you have an old Mapsource, update it or you'd need to tweak your registry inserting some keys-

Garmin Mapupdater it to download maps from Garmin if you have a valid subscription, not Noeman maps
