Default Garmin zumo 590 to 595

    Hello

    Can i update my garmin Nüvi 590 to a 595 ?
I have download the Zumo595_320.gcd from Perry.
    I have a full Backup from a original 595.

Is this the right way ?

Can someone help me please ?

    best regards

    Tutorials:
For hybrid conversion in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
For full conversion in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    Look behind Spoilers for details.

Conversion has some bugs and limitations:

Or, hopefully, one of our software experts can find the reasons for shortcomings and make a software patch.

I did "hybrid" flashing. Boot loader from 590 into firmware from 595.
Tested few days and found only one profit. On the upper bar can see earlier speed limit ahead. Sure it depends on maps etc…
With 590 firmware I used function "up ahead". Clearly showed me how many km's to the next gas station and so on. With 595 firmware "up ahead" offers not only distance, but name of gas station. Which means distance is showed by very small digits. It is not usable on a motorcycle…
    But at least I tried

I make hybrid firmware 590/595. After a few days of testing, I found another little bug - in Traffic alerts. Traffic texts (traffic delays, road is closed, ...) are in the correct language (i tried CZ, DE), but the audio description is english (reading in czech or germany voice). Others audio descriptions and navigation instructions are in correct language, only traffic not.
Can somebody confirm this? I can live with it, I am only curious :-) . Thanks
    Sorry for my english ;-)

Thats annoying...

You mean ZUMO 590 to 595 not nuvi i guess. If so, this seems possible. Both have PCB P/N of 105-02341-00 so they are compatible hardware it seems. Firmware bin file [maybe also its region 14 too] is much larger on 595 and a hybrid flash maintaining HWID will also depend on whether the 590's boot.bin will work with the larger 595 fw_all.bin.

    zumo590 595 compare

First things for you to do are to make a full file system backup and a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] of your zumo 590 [it may be rgn154 and sd path 2:/ rather than rgn41 and 1:/ but just do both to check].

I'm happy to help you with this, it's relatively simple to do and should work but there are no guarantees and any cross-flashing of firmware has some risk. The risk is of course all yours, even if you do exactly what i suggest and it harms your device it is your decision to take the steps so the responsibility rests with you. Having said that, there should be little to no risk because 590 and 595 share the same hardware.
    Spoiler: Click for Info:

There are two ways to do the conversion, one less risky than the other. The safest method which i've detailed below uses 'hybrid firmware', retains the present HWID of 1796 and uses the boot.bin from 590 to flash the firmware from 595. First ensure that you know how to get your device into [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and after you know how, gather ready 4 things: The two fw files zumo590_320.gcd and Zumo595_320.gcd, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] into a folder somewhere convenient, your desktop will do for now. Remove GUPDATE.GCD file from the device's .System folder if it's present in there [it might not be present, but make sure you check and remove it if it's there]. Either rename or remove the Text and keyboard folders in case they stop the unit booting, they can be replaced later with the 595 folders or named back if they're the same. Remove any sd card if there's one in the device. Then proceed as follows:

    • Hard reset or clear nonvol before starting [favourites can be restored from your files backup, GPX\current.gpx]
    • Open zumo590_320.gcd in RGN_Tool [drag the GCD onto RGN_Tool.exe], then press 'Save' on the first section to save it's boot.bin to the folder then close RGN_Tool
    • Open Zumo595_320.gcd in RGN_Tool and press 'Load' on the first section, browse to the saved boot.bin from 590 and load it to replace 595's boot.bin
    • In the 'Overrides' panel, check both 'HWID' and 'Software Version' boxes. Change HWID to 1796 and Software Version to 321. Ensure the check mark remains in box next to 'Replace HWID text strings'
    • Press 'RGN' button near top left of the GUI and save the resultant file ONLY named as 179601000321.rgn into your folder [do not use any other naming in this method]
    • Drag 179601000321.rgn onto Updater.exe, enable the radio button to the left of 'USB Device' and leave the GUI open on your desktop
    • Put your device into preboot using the method that worked however if having to hold the screen best to power it on by connecting to a rear port of PC. Keep watching the window to the right of 'USB Device' on Updater's GUI.
    • IMMEDIATELY you see the device window populated press 'OK' button on the GUI or just hit the enter key on your PC keyboard and keep holding the screen, if that method's been used to attain preboot, until the flash finishes.
    • Your device should reboot with 595 features enabled. Clear nonvol or hard reset again if the device has not reset itself by asking for location etc info be re-entered on initial boot. Replace the keyboard and text folders with the ones for 595.

The advantage of the above method is that your HWID remains as 1796 and it uses the original 590 boot.bin to flash the 595 firmware. Should it fail to flash then it may be necessary to use the full 595 firmware to flash as OUT.rgn which will change the HWID to 2436 and that's inherently more risky than keeping it as 1796 [retaining HWID usually makes it safer and easier to flash back if things go horribly wrong]. Using the full 595 fw may permanantly brick it so i strongly suggest you don't try that first off. If everything works perfectly with the hybrid firmware it's then less likely there'll be a problem using the full 595 fw. Sometimes it's possible to compress the donated firmware so that the original boot.bin will be able to flash it and that's another method which also retains the original HWID and might succeed even if the standard hybrid method doesn't work. Use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for that. Best just try the easy and safest hybrid method first.

Remember, this is all at your own risk whichever way you try. I'll now change the thread title from 'Nuvi 590 to 595' to 'Zumo 590 to 595'.

You're using the main system software [firmware] from zumo 595 of course, just with the boot from zumo 590. You can probably safely flash to full zumo 595 firmware seeing that it works with hybrid 590/595 firmware. If you try to update later with WebUpdater or GarminExpress it will read the HWID as 1796 and download the fw update file for 590 which will flash it back to a 590. So for future fw updating you'll either need to fully convert it to 595 with HWID 2436 or make hybrid fw again to retain HWID of 1796.

If you need the 595 Keyboard and Language Text files you can get them here:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
If you used the original 590 text and kb files and they worked but cause you problems in future remove them then open each of the above linked rgn files in RGN_Tool. In the first section you'll see 'pk_text.zip' which when extracted has the keyboard or text folders for 595.
