Have you cleared it's nonvol memory? Even if you did it, do it again a couple of times anyway: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

Also the gupdate.gcd that you added 'adjusted sw-version 631', what was that for? If you flashed the original firmware after formatting with cure firmware onboard, why add any GCD file? Maybe it's THAT file which has 're-bricked' it. You may have to re-cure it all over again to access Mass Storage Mode so you can remove the gcd file.

    Hi Neil,
i was reading another topic then saw the 631 thing...so i made one i copied to my garmin device. lols
Right now, it boots straight up into normal mode ( No map)...wont be recognized by Garmin express ( on Mac/ or Windows- i also check the cable with my other nuvi 50LM- works).
i tried multiple, can not access the Pre-boot mode any more ( it was easy for me to enter pre-boot mode and flash the cure/ original firmware)...
device just go straight up into loading map/ calibration...Iam losing hope now.

i just cleared nonvol as well, no help.

If it starts normally hold on battery symbol and go to hidden menu.
With hidden menu opened in nuvi, plug the cable and see if Updater sees it.
Few hopes but you can try.

i was able to access the hidden menu. Updater not recognizing it. This thing drove me nut for the past 20 hours ( installed XP and windows 7 on VMware, read and flashed crazy like 20 times) and i have a coming test need to study but it is good to know more about GPS device.
Thank you very much Catymag, Neil and Smokefree.

Try to clean USB connector in nuvi and try with other cables.
"accessory is not supported" message means something wrong in USB connection.
Look at pins, may be you damaged them flashing and reflashing.
In this case you can try to load files following [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Or load them in a sd.

Also you've lost the model number, it should show 'nuvi 1490' not 'nuvi 14xx' on the first page of hidden menu. If you have a back up of region 41 [the non-volatile memory region] you should restore it. The unit may have a hardware problem with the USB socket as suggested above or its mo connection, or a component has failed on the board but more likely because of the '14xx' i think region 41 is corrupted.

    Hi guys,
Last night i was able to copy the basemap.img, gmap.img...etc into the device's memory via SD card method (i changed the update.txt in the updater folder that i downloaded on this forum).
I copied an unlocked 2017 NA map to a 8gb SD card and inserted in to device.
GPS device works now (not sure about lifetime map/ traffics stuffs)...except it is not recognizable by Garmin express anymore ( still better than a $250 brick).
    Thank you very much everyone.

I have an AU 1490LM with a damaged USB, it still charges fine but the MSM function is badly compromised. It has some cracked USB connections to the PCB which 'make & break' when the socket is moved ever so slightly. I know how to fix it but I've kept it like that because it can be updated quite easily via microSD text commands, with internal folders and files copied for backup, or deleted, or added, or just overwritten. Once you're accustomed to doing it it's not too much more trouble than updating conventionally. As for obtaining Lifetime Maps and any other updates from Garmin, with my unit all that can be done using a USB device/Virtual SD with a copy of the unit's GarminDevice.xml file in a Garmin folder. GarminExpress and WebUpdater then loads all updates to it as if it is the actual device [you'll see references in here and other forums as that being 'a nuvi clone' or what i prefer to call 'a nuvi stunt-double']. Everything can then be either sent via txt commands to the device's internal memory or, if appropriate, copied onto a microSD to use in the device.

You unfortunately have two problems, one immediate and the other latent/possible. Immediate problem being [if i'm surmising correctly and the nonvol region 41 is indeed corrupt] you might have lost all your device's unlock and registration codes as well as your model number, so a current copy of the XML file will be unable to convince the Garmin servers of the LM entitlement anyway. If you have a copy of the XML file from a backup before you lost the model number then you can use that to get your LM updates with genuine .unl and .gma codes. Of course you can continue to get unlocked maps here anyway ....

Potential [and maybe fatal] problem is if the device 'bricks'. Unfortunately with a damaged/corrupt nonvol that's always more likely than with a completely healthy device. It's maybe possible, provided it will then still take SD commands even if bricked, to erase rgn41 entirely and hope the 'bricked' device will then be able to boot far enough to re-create a clean non-corrupt XML itself, but of course 41 will be incomplete, as it maybe is now, but without any corruption. With my 1490 i can simply repair the loose USB connections and then have preboot available to use cure firmware for it. In your case it's quite unlikely to be recoverable simply because i do believe it's compellingly likely that your problem is not simply a hardware breakdown. You didn't mention if you have an backup of region 41 [NV or nonvol backup] so i assume not. If you did have one, even from years ago, you could probably have fixed the device in a mere few minutes. Moral: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and then back up the backup and keep it for the life of the device.

    Hi Neil,
Im able to update the sd card now with garmin.xml file that i dont know where is it from but it has the same SN as my GPS unit.
Can you give me an instruction how to copy this to main memory ( the update.txt file)?
I believe you are right about that i caused severe damage to my system, i flashed and flashed crazy without knowing mechanism well.Fortunately, GPS works now except no lane assist.

    14xx
