help Help with patching fw for nuvi 55 and backing up it's NV.

    Happy New Year to All!

    I have a Nuvi 55LM.
    HWID: 1697 | SWVS: 450 | MAP: Yes | GMA: Yes | MSV: Yes | GSV: Yes | File: nuvi55_56_450.gcd

    J:\.System\RemoteSW --> I have two .gcd files: 006B154600.GCD (1,029 kb) and 006B211200.GCD (79kb)

Which one do I have to open it with RGN.tool? There is no gupdate.gcd file in .system folder....

    J:\.System\ExtData ---> I have 8 .bin files: 006-D4511-01 (to -08)
Which bin file do I have to load to RGN.tool?

I am very confused with RGN.tool? Please help me.... Thanks.

    Happy to you too!

All you need is gupdate.gcd in .System folder! The nuvi55_56_450.gcd is the same gupdate.gcd for you if you have version of 4.50 of SW in your device. Do not have it - it is not problem. Goto here:

G'day bluemoon, Happy New Year to you too and welcome to GPS Power.

If you haven't previously updated firmware with GarminExpress or WebUpdater since new then there will be no gupdate.cgd file in .System folder. The gcd files in RemoteSW and the bin files in ExtData folder have nothing to do with the unit software [firmware].

Generally, if a unit has a RWFS partition then the backup will be done to '2' for the microSD and '1' will write to RWFS instead:

Your nuvi55 will probably have nonvol in region 154 but just copy both regions 41 and 154 if not sure.

To check the firmware version currently loaded to the unit, from the main page press Settings>Device>About and look for Software Version. If you don't have latest version update it with GU or WU or get the latest V4.50 as said by Giomen.

All the info you need is available in [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] too. If not sure how to proceed ongoing, have a look there first Mate.

    Thanks!!

I was gifted with the NUVI 55LM a few days ago. I would like to install with a few unlocked maps in it.
Its SW is 4.50. Since there is no gupdate.gcd, as you guided, I have downloaded nuvi55_56_450.gcd successfully.

From here, how could I apply the universal patcher? I am a bit scared to do it without backup my new Nuvi which is also very difficult to do.
Where can I put nuvi55_56_450.qcd file? It will be located in a .system folder? After applying the patcher, do I have rename it to gupdate.gcd or leave it as nuvi55_56_450.qcd?

Your step-by-step instruction would be highly appreciated.
    Peace.

    Thanks, Neil!

I just got that device a few days ago. I have updated it with GE, and its SW is 4.50 now. It has RWFS Settings also.

Where could I find nonvol file later on? Perhaps, where are the folders: region 154 or regins 41?

    Thanks for your assistance. Peace.

Hi, Catymag! You are a genius...
I want to back up my new nuvi 55LM before applying a patcher.
I tried to follow your instruction without any pre-knowledge about nuvi system.

I am stuck at the stage 4. "4-In the above folder copy Ldr.bin . What is Ldr.bin? It is your firmware boot.bin you can extract with RGN_tool"
Where can I find boot.bin file? I could not find it in .system folder.
In J:\.System\ExtData, I can only see 006-D4511-01 (to 08).bin files. And in J:\.System\Diag, there is a sys_log2.bin file. That's all.

If you could help me to tackle this, I would appreciate it very much. Peace...

Ok bluemoon, it seems that Sydney has moved from NSW to the State of Confusion, lol! Take a deep breath, slow down and read everything again.

Go back to the firmware patcher thread and read my post #4 there. Your unit has both 'MSV: Yes' and 'GSV: Yes'. So you must use Updater.exe to load the initial patched firmware as an rgn file made with RGN_Tool. I have a sense that you don't have any backgound knowledge or previous experience doing this so i'm going to do three things: Make a 'kit' for you to backup nonvol, make another kit for you to easily flash the patched firmware and also move these recent posts to a discussion thread because we're getting quite OT here now. Actually 4 things, because i'm going to merge your 3 posts above [we don't much like unnecessarily consecutive posts here] .

So stand by, check back later today and i'll have added the kits to this post as an Edit. Give me an hour or so and in the meantime read everything again very carefully because i want you to understand what the process is as much as possible because the risk will be all yours. Ldr.bin and boot.bin are the same files and they are part of the total firmware contained in the gcd and rgn files. There is no such thing as 'folders: region 154 or regions 41'. The unit's regions are not part of its flash memory contained in folders visible in MSM, they are like little separate hidden 'partitions' if you like but that's oversimplification. Forget all your preconceived thoughts on this and re-read but if you don't understand don't do anything until you do.

    EDIT:
Here's your two kits in compressed rar files. The first is named 'extract-to-card.rar' for the nonvol backup. Use it first and then if successful use the patched firmware flash kit named 'Extract_to_your_PC_Desktop'. Ensure your unit has plenty of charge. Further instructions with the kits below:

    Hi, Neal!

You are absolutely right, for I am totally ignorant of such complicated process.
It will take ages for me to learn about all these, starting with nuvi terminologies and related files.
I hope that the state of my confusion will be ended with your kind provisions (three things you mentioned above) in the near future.

    Peace...

    Hi, Neal
It is with your provided files that I could successfully back it up before patching.
I then moved to the second stage:

"Now put your unit in preboot mode. The easy way to do that is to hold the battery symbol on the main screen ['Where to?/'View Map' screen] for ~ 6 seconds until a hidden menu appears." ==> I did it with success.

"Plug a suitable usb cable into a REAR port of your PC and then connect the nuvi. When you see the unit's details appear in the window to the right of 'USB Device', click 'OK' " ==> it flashed less than a second, and I missed the right moment several times. Finally, I was able to click "OK" when it showed on "USB Device." However, it showed an error message as loaded:

    App: Updater
    At: 12/27/2015 6:39:21 AM (UTC)
OS: WIN32 Windows Platform, Major Version: 6, Minor Version: 2
Processor: Pentium Pro or Pentium II, RAM: 4194303 KB
    IOU_USBLINK.CPP-710-2.7

    Nothing is easy for me....
I nearly got there, but one more step with your assistance is needed.

    Thanks and peace.

Keep trying but first be sure you have Garmin USB drivers loaded: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Sometimes an error will appear 2 or 3 times and then it will flash fine. If you also wish to try putting it into pre-boot mode the other way: Have Updater open then with your nuvi fully OFF [not in standby], hold the top LH corner of the screen, plug in the usb and immediately press 'OK' when the unit's details appear in the field next to 'USB Device'. Keep holding the screen unit finished or at least until 'Loader' or 'Software loading' appears on the screen.

    Many many thanks, Neil!
"Hold the top LH corner of the screen" was the secret... Now, it is your excellent help that I came to patch it with success.
Now, I can happily take my nuvi overseas.... Once again, thanks for your kind assistance in the midst of end-of-year busyness.
I wish you a happy and blessed New Year.

    Peace.
