Hi Neil. I'm new to the forum. Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm super stuck. I have a Nuvi 55LM purchased in November 2015 with US lifetime maps. I've also installed AU & NZ maps on a flash drive. I have converted the patched GUPDATE.rgn file with RGN_Tool. I have also downloaded and installed the latest USB drivers from garmin's website as you stated above. I've tried your steps to get into 'pre-boot' mode from a completely off state, but I'm not having any luck. The Updater program will not recognize my Nuvi at all. When I press the top left corner of the screen on startup, after the Garmin logo disappears, the screen flashes white with a "touch dot" message and a black dot on the bottom left corner. This screen is only visible for half a second, then the screen turns black with "Garmin.com/express" message with computer image. No amount of pressing helps. The device never pops up in the 'USB Device' dropdown and clicking OK doesn't do anything. Can you help me figure out how else to get into 'pre-boot' mode to flash the firmware? (I also tried pressing the battery icon on the main screen which turns on the secret menu, but switches to garmin.com/express screen once I plug the usb into the PC. I'm running win7 pro. Many thanks in advance.)

Read and follow carefully this thread:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Your nuvi goes to "calibration" because it's no more in preboot, you must keep on holding and pressing.

Thank you very much Catymag for that link! It took me several tries, but it worked. These are the steps that worked with my Nuvi 55LM. With the WebUpdater running on the PC loaded with the .rgn file and USB cable attached to the back of the Nuvi:
    1. Press and hold the power button and plug in the USB cable to PC simultaneously
    2. When the Garmin logo appears, press and hold the top left corner of the screen on the Nuvi. Click 'OK' in the Updater window for "USB Device" when it appears on the dropdown box
    3. When updater begins to flash the firmware, release the power button on the Nuvi, but continue depressing the top left corner of the screen.
    4. Release your finger from the Nuvi screen after updater displays a "successful" message (about 60 seconds after start)
    5. Complete
