    Neil - I don't think it works...
I flashed the device with the new firmware after hard resting it. I then deleted the device in garmin express, and added a new device. Garmin express still identifies my device as edge explore 1000....

Connect it to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and see how it's recognised.

Also you may have to completely uninstall GarminExpress and clean all registry entries etc [using Ccleaner or Revo Unistaller free versions should suffice] to completely remove all trace of GE. Then re-instal it and add the device again.

ok - in web updated it say its Edge 1000... in fact it say that there is an update (version 7) so I am not sure if I should update it since I already have version 7...

With respect to Garmin Express - I've installed it on a new PC - and it still identify it as Explore 1000 - but it also identify the serial number - so it could be determined based on that... rather than on the ID...?

More precisely it's identifying it on the basis of the Unit ID which is 10 numerals and is tied to the S/No in any case. WU is probably identifying it on it's HWID solely. I think Garmin is getting smarter with finding ways via GE to trip up ppl who mod upgrade related devices to the Senior model.

Check the GarminDevice.xml found in the unit's Garmin folder. Search it for the first instances of 'PartNumber' and 'SoftwareVersion'. It should show '<PartNumber>006-B1836-00</PartNumber>' and '<SoftwareVersion>700</SoftwareVersion>'. If it does, accept the WU upgrade and let's see what happens [it will probably just add V7.00 gupdate.gcd to the unit's .System folder which won't be acted upon by the unit itself because it already has it onboard]. If any different numbers are shown do nothing other than report back.

I checked and I have the numbers you specified, WU did the update and did not notice any change...

Another problem, which I don't think is related to the above matter - I deleted the device from GE - and now I can't get it back because when I am asked to sign in into my GC account - I am getting a message "We're unable to sign you in because our servers are unavailable at this time"

Additionally, in the phone app of GC - it is recognized as Edge 1000 - if I try to upload stuff from it (like segments) it is written that it is not supported... oh well... I can live with it... :-)

Like i said, i think Garmin is getting smarter and using their modern software 'helper' programs to trip us up. HWIDs can be changed but UIDs are permanent. So you may just have to live with it as you said.

Neil - so apparently there are some issues with this conversion...
As I said before connect does not recognize the device. Now I have a new phone and I try to pair it via Bluetooth and it does not even find my garmin and thus can't connect to it.
I would like to revert back to the hybrid firmware (the edge 1000 but with the Explore ID). I have the file you gave me, but my question is - does it have the Explore ID or does it have an empty entry on the ID field. If I will flash with it - will I get back the hybrid state or I will end up with the Edge 1000 ID as I am now?
I just want to try if having the explore ID back will allow connect deal with it properly.

The device now has HWID of 1836 being for Edge 1000. If you wish to flash the hybrid firmware back [HWID 2204] then take the pack i originally provided in Post #15 and rename '220401000700.rgn' to 'OUT.rgn' then follow the rest of the instructions there to flash it as a hybrid. Don't forget to do resets both before and after the flash.

Please as always be aware that you're 'first cab off the rank' with this. I don't have an Edge Explore to try this with and i'm more comfortable when i can experiment on a unit myself before giving advice to others. So you need to continue to accept that the risk, if any, is entirely yours because as far as i'm aware no one else has done what we're doing in this thread. If you want to 'chicken out' entirely at any point then you'll need to flash the full Explore firmware i supplied in Post #33. Copious reset are essential, done before and after any fw flash, but particularly where the HWID is being changed on the unit. Even so, there is still the chance that one rogue byte of data remains lurking somewhere to brick the device.

Make sure you keep that NV backup of region 41 i said to make in Post #15. It may be your lifeline if things ever do go wrong.
