I’ve read many threads and posts in preparation for an attempt to patch a new SmartDrive 50 LMT-D (HWID: 2267) preloaded with Lifetime Western Europe Maps and Traffic, I want to be able to load a USA map and would be grateful for clarification on one or two points.

The software Version is 4.10 and the Hardware version V5 M4V3 16GB CA So5 C5 CTP BT DAB.

    a) Where do I find the Firmware version? (or is the “Firmware” the software version?)
    b) Will patching affect the lifetime map updates & traffic?
    c) Do the references to “region” refer to areas of internal memory and how do I determine the region information in order to backup the NV?

Apologies if these questions are basic but I’m new to Garmin from TomToms.

    .
You should read starting post here only.
a)Where do I find the Firmware version?
Look at garmindevice.xml in Garmin folder. Info on how to get the *gcd to patch in OP.
b)Will patching affect the lifetime map updates & traffic?
    No.
c)Do the references to “region” refer to areas of internal memory and how do I determine the region information in order to backup the NV?
You have a link in OP on how to backup it.
Read OP with care, all the needed info are in OP.

Many thanks for your guidance and confirmation that patching will not affect lifetime updates and traffic.
I have searched the garmindevice.xml as suggested but have not found a reference to "firmware" so I still don't know.
I have also read the OP several times and will again before taking the plunge, but the link to "How to backup Nuvi NV (region41) with sd" indicates that the "region" is not the same for all Garmins, so I'm not sure quite what should be in the update.txt file for mine. Please bear with me if I'm getting confused it's probably old age. thanks for your help.

I notice in your previous post you seem unsure whether 'firmware version' and 'software version' are the same. They are indeed interchangeable references.

You're not looking for the direct reference to firmware there, you're looking for the HWID, i.e. HardWare IDentification, which will disclose which firmware the device uses [all units with same HWID use same fw].

HWID is shown in the device's GarminDevice.xml by reference to it's "Model", specifically it's "PartNumber". If you open the XML in a web browser, the first ref to Model and PartNumber appears in about the first half dozen lines or so therefore you don't even need to search for it. The 4 numerals following "006-B" are the HWID, in your case it's 006-B2267-00 as you've already reported for DriveSmart 50 so you're halfway there. Use latest firmware [Garmin calls it 'unit software', or just 'software' is also used, a piece of 'firmware' is indeed 'software' in the general sense]. As part of 'Model' you can see the currently loaded 'SoftwareVersion' [410 = Version 4.10 for instance]. You can also find the HWID and the SW Version in a hidden menu on the device itself: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Software versions can be found in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] > [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] > where you can see this link for the latest V4.10:

The forum is very comprehensive and well laid-out, you just have to look for stuff which is quicker than waiting for answers to basic questions usually.

I have also read the OP several times and will again before taking the plunge, but the link to "How to backup Nuvi NV (region41) with sd" indicates that the "region" is not the same for all Garmins, so I'm not sure quite what should be in the update.txt file for mine. That thread actually states in an update note that you need to backup region 154 in recent devices and that the backup path to the media card in them is 2:/ [not 1:/ as in earlier devices] - i.e. rrgn,154,2:/154.bin.

You are best to want to understand what is happening when you flash modded firmware as you clearly want, you just need to read a little more carefully in the right places.

    catymag and Neil
My sincere thanks to you both for taking time to provide such clear and comprehensive answers.
I had not previously encountered the term "software" as an alternative to "Firmware" which I understood to be embedded code (software) in ROM to facilitate functionality of other hardware in a device, hence my confusion. Trying to keep up with varying use of terminology in the 8th decade of life is sometimes a challenge but thanks to the generosity of forum contributors it's often made much easier. I will read the OP again in the next few days before attempting the patching and will report back.

No problems, Old Timer [can call you that, although only a matter of months away from entering my 8th decade too]. Knew naught of GPS other than how to navigate with one until well into my 60's when i joined this great forum just over 5 yrs back. Everything i know i learned from here. Take it slow, every bit of info is already here, it's just a matter of finding and then assimilating it fully. If not sure just ask. Don't worry, we won't bite [old blokes are too tough].

Read [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for a report of extended time taken to backup NV and flash fw from SD for related DriveSmart unit. It may just be that these units have a very large region 154 [all is backed up, including empty space byte for byte] or you are using an old slow card [write speed is diminished as block leveling is degraded, more use = more blocks are worn, even in higher speed-rated cards].

SD pack for DriveLuxe 50 HWID 2269 only:
    Spoiler:
    • [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] both before and after flashing
    • Extract this file directly to a CLEAN microSD card and insert it into your device with it turned off: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    • Turn it on, connect it to a power source even if the battery level isn't low
    • 'Loader', then 'Software Loading' should appear on the screen, wait for it to finish and reboot, it might take some many minutes SO LET IT FINISH [it may brick if you turn it off or removed the card prematurely]
    • When it successfully reboots, remove the card, and look in the root as there should be a new file named 'BUP_154.bin' which is your NV backup so keep it safe for the life of your device
    • Your device should now be successfully patched in V4.10 and accept unlocked maps.

Warning to others: This is for use by HWID 2269 devices DriveLuxe 50 ONLY. Do not use for any other devices. Do not modify it unless you know exactly what you're doing as use of an incompatible Ldr.bin can irretrievably BRICK your device.
