    4. run WebUpdater, which detects the flash drive as Garmin, make an update, it saves the file on the USB drive with firmware (usually a GUPDATE.GCD)

Im sorry if it was already.
No problem for it to be posted again to remind users. That's known as using 'a fake nuvi' [or what i call 'a nuvi stunt-double' and is well-known. Another even simpler way to do that without even using an XML from a real device is in Post #9 here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Very simple as long as you have the correct HWID.

I've followed all the directions but am failing on getting my new Montana 610 to pre-boot. Holding the power button down or even holding the left corner of the screen will not get the updated to see my GPS. I have the Garmin USB drivers installed. I have Windows 10 and I can access all files on the GPS via win explorer.

The firmware is at 240, the latest which is the same that i patched.

    Need help please!

    Hi,

Why do you want to pre-boot your Montana 610 ? You don't need it ! It's not GSV protected !
You only have to insert 2.40 patched .gcd file (you renamme gupgate.gcd) into garmin folder, your device being connected in mass storage on your computer. Then remove properly device of PC, then reboot Montana and let install patched firmware.
    Read carefully post #1.

Take care to that as well :
Warning for Montana 680 users (your 610 might behave the same):
after loading patched firmware, reset the unit and disable Geocache Dashboard in map settings before using unlocked map or the unit locks up when it is selected.

    Hi Sergio,

I did that first but I still got Maps "Can't Authenticate Maps" failure message. I did also apply step #9. Since the maps weren't authenticated, I couldn't select them from Map on the Montana. I loaded the maps on an SD card after unlocking them in Mapsource 6.15.7

Then this failed I did all steps and was eventually able to get into pre-boot on another computer. I don't know why this part was so hard. I realize that only steps 1 to 5 and 9 are required for the Montana 610.

    Questions:

    1) My firmware was already the latest, i.e. 240 for the Montana. I did get the same file from Garmin and dropped it into the IMG Patcher. It resulted in "Montana610_680_240_Patched.gcd" I put that on the unit in the "Garmin" folder. I later renamed it to "gupdate.gcd".

    - Must the patched file be named "gupdate.gcd" or any name but with the gcd extension?
    - Must the patched gcd file show a later version or will it load regardless as long as it is put into the Garmin folder on the unit?

    2) Do I need to take other action on the map img file?

    3) as a test, I used gimgunlock.exe in a DOS, CMD window, I ran the test img file and this worked!

    gimgunlock.exe "H:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img"

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks

You did ok at point n.1.
    - Must the patched file be named "gupdate.gcd" or any name but with the gcd extension?
    - Must the patched gcd file show a later version or will it load regardless as long as it is put into the Garmin folder on the unit?
Patcher can rename it so no problem flashing if it's the same firmware

The patcher allows to load and use UNLOCKED maps, so you must run on img gimgunlock+mapsigpatch.
Drag&drop the img in its icon simple!

I own a Dezl 770LM and a DezlCamLM and both are high end GPS devices, are they compatible with this method ? Am at great risk of damaging the devices ? If it's possible to unlock them... where should I start ?

Yes I have read everything but I can't see these models anywhere in that list.
