    Hi catymag,

Are the older (legacy) devices like the Nuvi 350 now impacted by this heavy encryption to prevent installing unlocked maps?

Hello guys. I am new on this forum. Just got my new GPSMAP 64st HWID - 'B1859'
I downloaded unlocked maps from Garmin and I'm getting a message Can't Authenticate Maps. Contact content seller for help.
So as I understood I have to patch my firmware unfortunately I updated my device to the latest firmware which is 4.20
I read first step very close but I'm a bit confused which way I should take for patching?
and the second question when I am trying to backup my current firmware using RGN Tool but I do not know which kind of firmware I have to download from garmin or the websites which version and how to see software version.
Thank you very much in advance. Just do not want to break my device but without official maps actually this device is very limited.

Oh good. Do we have a list of devices that we know not to update the firmware? Routinely Garmin sends out "timezone" updates. I am thinking they might include this encryption at that time?

Please read post #1 again. You may have overlooked the download for the list (tucked away behind a Spoiler).

The timezome updates are in Garmin's proprietary img format [gmaptz.img] and have nothing to do with unit software [firmware] updates as such. Perhaps you've noticed that the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] is available as an RGN file and as such you may have associated it with firmware but the file type is merely a convenient way to deliver the update and the RGN file contains only the timezone map. Open TimeZoneMap_1700.rgn in RGN_Tool and you'll see that there is only one section populated, 'unknown.bin', so save that as 'gmaptz.img' and there's the map.

I think LittleCassie keep in mind that the latest timezone img is not locked but it is really signed by Garmin!
P.S. Garmin unsigned the latest WorldWideShadow map for marine devices which include timezone map by the way.

    Hi,

I've just patched my brand new Nüvi 68 : it looks as if it had worked (I can display for example Topo France Pro v4 unlocked with classical gimgunlock v0.03).

But when I flashed Nüvi 68 with updater.exe and .rgn file, I was scared when I saw Nüvi 57 written on updater.exe window while achieving update process.

    Any explanation ?

It is misprint of Garmin developers from the time of UAT SW testing. I do not wait see it in actual SW. You can search for - bad_alloc: out of memory, and after third occurrence you could see:

    bad_alloc: out of memory %s: out of memory n ü v i 5 7 I O P A p p M a i n

All of us is not flawless in real doings...
