    Then I have to thank:
    Neil
    catymag
    big-bang
    glengarry

Firmware installed and all is ok.
It was the &%&/(% USB cable. The tip from catymag to change it, I did so, and viola, all was running fine.
Strange thing is that the USB cable works for copying files normal.
I found out that as soon as the pre-boot process start and you click ok on the updater, you do not longer need to keep screen presses.

    Thanks again

    Nice jotne you succeeded
I got the same with the latest nuvi I patched, Garmin cable failed and I had to use a cheap Chinese cable after trying with nobler ones.

Lol I usually keep on pressing.....

Well, that's mostly right but could be construed wrongly. Once you click Updater's 'OK' [or hit Enter key - i've used my elbow for that with difficult units such as '10 sec preboot time nuvi 7xx' where you need 3 hands, lol], there's a very short pause, maybe only a mere split-second later, before Loader Loading/Loader/Software Loading will progressively show on device screen. That message indicates Updater and the device have started the flashing process. It's at that point where you can release the pressure, but if you stop holding a fraction of a second before Updater.exe starts the flash and/or the device responds to the data stream then preboot will be instantly dropped and it will fail to flash. Timing is everything and as Caty points out just keep holding, because that cannot cause any problems at all.

Don't even start me on %^&*$#@ usb cables!! I have a enough to fill a bucket, some will flash all but one particular unit and then you'll find the one that never worked before with any Garmin unit will flash that one stubborn unit. Go figure! It's the same with flashing or dumping regions from/to SD cards, occasionally the Sandisk one that always worked will do nothing and a cheap 'no-brand' will work in that certain unit but not any others reliably.

Moral of the story: Like our persistent friends glengarry and Jotne, be obsessively PERSISTENT and try everything: Different ways to enter preboot; multiple USB cables; holding your mouth right ..... ok, i might be exaggerating a little bit with the last one, but EVERY healthy unit with a functioning screen and working USB socket can enter preboot and EVERY such unit can then be flashed in preboot if you have the right RGN file and do the procedure correctly. Even after a dozen or more failed attempts with error messages, just keep trying and try everything.

Here's my latest - I tried to get my 2689 into pre-boot a number of times, also got 'she who must be obeyed' involved in the procedure. No luck. Then I had the unit on, plugged in the usb. the screen said loading, but the model id wasn't in updater's window. I turned the gps off and as I did a message appeared saying 'update loaded'.
Now, how do I know if I'm successsful (at this)?

Load an unlocked map to a Garmin folder of a microSD card and insert it in the unit [x:\Garmin\gmapsupp.img]. If the unit recognises it you're done.

If model number wasn't in Updater window I guess it hasn't flashed patched firmware, no flashing bar I guess, no success message probably.
@GeoffRBG do you have Garmin USB drivers installed on pc?

Hi Catymag, yes I do have Garmin usb drivers installed. Now, Neil says to load an unlocked map into a Garmin folder on a sd card. The last map I downloaded was europe 2016-20 and it was 22Gb.
Can someone walk me through that process please?

Hi again, I don't know how to load an unlocked map. There seem to be so many and so many parts to each one!
I downloaded one section of an unlocked europe 2016-30 to my sd card and I can see it on my pc, but can't seem to find it on my gps.
I have created a folder on my sd called Garmin, then ther's a file called gmapsupp.img and in that I have the bit of the europe map called CNEUNTU2o163o-IMG-UL.
I still am trying to see if I've loaded update, which is why I've posted here and not in the maps thread.
    Cheers,
    GeoffRBG

What exactly did you download? Best give the link to the post you got it from.

If you do have an unlocked map in sd:\Garmin named gmapsupp.img as you've said but it's not listed in your nuvi's map info then it's not being seen. Settings>Map & Vehicle>myMaps will show you any recognised detail maps on the unit or on an inserted mcroSD.

Also if you did actually update with 194801000781.rgn, then Settings>Device>About will now show "Software Version: 7.81" instead of 7.80.
