It depends. If the the GCD file you've removed is the same version you need to patch then use the gupdate.gcd you've removed from the unit. Remember that there may not even be one on the unit so you may still need to download a GCD file anyway. About the order of 1) and 2), it could be construed that you firstly remove the file and then connect in Mass Storage Mode. Of course you do need MSM to remove the file anyway.

The device needs to be then disconnected from MSM with the computer only if you are intending to flash by an RGN file in preboot mode. Some units do not need initial flashing like that and you can simply put the patched GCD in .System, safely disconnect from the computer and it will flash on next boot from the GCD file. Read Post #1 carefully again and the last part of Post #4:
......... it's the units which contain a GSV check [both "MSV: Yes" and "GSV: Yes" ....] where only the initial fw loading needs be done as a patched GCD file converted to an RGN file and then loaded using Updater.exe, later versions of fw can be then be simply loaded via a patched GCD file. For units ......... with "MSV: Yes" and "GSV: ---" even the initial loading can be via patched GCD file.

    Thanks for your quick response,
I have gupdate.gcd in my device, it is same version as downloaded GCD, nuvi2xx7and2xx8C4_780.gcd, version 7.80. So I will use the one from my device.

Yes, I read post#4, I need to go through RGN file for the first time and patch it in pre-boot mode, I will try this tomorrow.

Is it possible to unpatch a patched firmware? just in case

    Best Regards
    Sid

Just flash nuvi back with original firmware by Webupdater or copying original firmware in .System or in sd/Garmin

    Hello,
Today I was about to patch my Nuvi 2547, but there was an update of map and software, so I updated the same first.
    Then Software version became 8.20.

I successfully patched this version 8.20, First Patcher, then generate .rgn file.
It was bit tricky to go to preboot mode as the window of opportunity is so small but it was successful.

I copied unlocked map images to sd card and I can see those map in my maps. No more "cannot unlock the map" error.

Thank you all for tools to patch, so many clear tutorials and very active, experienced, senior members. Very helpful forum

    Best Regards
    Sid

    I need help with my 2597LMT ...

First of all, I would like to thank all the folks for the great work - the explanations, the links to further details, the collection of tools and everything.

I have tried to follow this procedure so I can access 'unlock' maps. I got my gps yesterday, updated it to the latest and greatest from Garmin site, only to find out I cannot access the 'unlocked' maps. I found this article, followed all the steps and kept stumbling in the update / patch step.

I keep getting the following during the 'update/flash' portion ..,

App: Updater At: 1/7/2016 9:21:15 PM (UTC)
OS: WIN32 Windows Platform, Major Version: 6, Minor Version: 1 Service Pack 1
Processor: Pentium Pro or Pentium II, RAM: 4194303 KB
    IOU_USBLINK.CPP-710-2.8

I got into preboot mode by pressing the battery symbol. When the screen switched to the SW Ver ... section, I plugged in the usb, clicked OK on updater when the id showed up in the USB section, it ran for a few seconds and then I would get the error message. Note that I was not pressing the power button or left corner of the screen. Did I get into the preboot mode properly.

Also my software version has been updated to 8.20, but Siddu, the previous user, had no problem with it.

Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Try to enter preboot mode normal way pressing upper left corner and connect nuvi USB still pressing.
Updater must be already opened on pc and USB option selected.
    Try another USB cable too.

Okay, small steps. I've checked the FW list and my device (2689) is there ( HWID 1948 nuvi 26X9 C4_780.gcd), so I assume I have to load the patched firmware in pre-boot mode?
Step 1....." remove any gupdate.gcd on your device" - delete the file?
    Step 2 done
    Step 3 ..."download patcher" where?
Step 4 ..."download patcher.... in a directory along your firmware gupdate.gcd" - my 2689 does not appear to be on the "Garmin device HWID's and software update pages" link.
    Where to now?
    Regards,
    GeoffRBG

    Hello big-bang.

Is it thinkable that your tool can also support , in the future, the patch of JNX . ( firware patch for MSV and JNX, same path.)

After firmware patch was applied my Montana 610, HWID 2299, SW 2.30 can load maps unlocked by gimgunlock-0.03+MapSigPatch in gps.

    Thank big-bang!!

And thank Catymag for your information and help!!
