    Ok I got to the flashing stage My Garmin shows up and then I get an error message:

    The Garmin device is not responding please ensure the following and try again:

    1. The garmin devices interface option is set to Garmin or Host mode.
    2. The cable is connected to the right serial port (im using USB)
    3. The garmin device is turned on.

    I continued retrying and sometimes get the following:

    No updates are available for your product.

    Lastly I can get an installer bar that says "initalizing in..."

    Any suggestions on what I am missing??

    Not in SF's tut it doesn't, it just says to download it:
    How to unbrick a nüvi

    1. To enable the unit to be recognized as a mass storage device, flash CURE firmware into the unit, using GarminCure3 and Updater.exe:
    - Download original firmware file *.GCD
    - Have GarminCure3.exe and Updater.exe in one folder.
    - Start GarminCure3.
    etc.......
    I gave you the firmware thread link before. My best advice, don't use GE at all for anything ever again. Everything it can do you can do in other ways. I'm constantly un-bricking devices which have been updated with GE.

    V6.20 direct from Garmin site:
    Code:
    Please Login or Register to see the links
    Please read and re-read that tut until you understand it.

    Ok I tried your link and success.

    Now Garmin Express is detecting my unit again and says there is a map update. Do I do that or continue to step 2 of the How to guide?

    Gone through the whole unbrick process got the green bar and the icon to come up when plugged into PC. Cant do a factory reset though with the bottom right screen press. Webupdater also says there are no updates to install.

    Still cant seem to get past the Garmin main screen??

    Suggestions?

    Best not to make major edits to a post once you've received a reply. That would have been better as a new post seeing when i answered it above you'd originally asked only 'Can you please explain how to get the firmware it says to use GarminExpress to do that?

    In short, the unit wasn't in pre-boot mode at all going by what you've posted in the edit above.

    What do you mean by 'gone thru the whole unbrick process'. You should say what you've done in detail.

    e.g.: "1. Flashed cure3 firmware; 2. Reformatted properly with RMPrepUSB; 3. Flashed original fw; 4. It can now enter Mass Storage Mode, GE offers a map update but neither it or WU is offering other files". Is that what you're saying? If not, say EXACTLY what you've done and what was observed at each step or we'll be guessing too much.

    If you still can't get past the logo splash screen [is that what you're calling 'the main screen'?] but can now access MSM, that would indicate that you still have the cure fw on board. Cure fw CAN'T boot the unit - that's the whole idea of it so that the boot process bypasses loading maps and other files, one of which is preventing it booting with original fw on board. A still-bricked unit can't access MSM unless it's got cure fw loaded in other words, nor can it be hard reset.

    Post again with a 'blow-by-blow' of precisely what's been done and observed.

    Sorry I thought I had edited my post before any replys were made. My bad.

    Yes I followed the guide. So did the following:

    1. Downloaded Garmin cure 3 plus the link you provided for the firmware. Selected cure and generated then I hit the updater.

    2. When I plugged the cable to the back of the unit "ding dong" and then the unit showed in the USB box. Multipleclicks on the ok button and retry as listed above and it started to transfer onto the device. It asked if I wanted to repplace as it was the same version and I said yes. Update completed.

    3. Ran the RMprepUSB with no issues.

    4. Re did the Garmin Cure 3 with original selected. Update successful.

    5. Garmin detected by both Wepupdater as well as Garmin Express. Says no further updates are available.

    6. Still stuck on Garmin screen (Splash/Logo/Main)

    If I understand your explanation it still has the cure as oppose to the original that makes sense I guess but I am unsure what I should do differently. Perhaps I am not doing the preboot correctly?

    It means it hasn't had a drive letter allocated by Windows automatically. You need to add one manually in Disk Management, right-click 'GARMIN' drive, select 'Change Drive Letters & Paths...' then assign a suitable letter:

    ...........
    What i've put in red above indicates to me one of 2 things:
    First and most likely, that the cure fw is still on the unit. That's supported by the fact that WebUpdater and GarminExpress don't offer any updates. They read the GarminDevice.xml to determine what is and isn't required to update the unit - that xml file is updated on every boot cycle and if the original file [generated after software updates with GE but prior to it bricking during the map update] is still there WU and GE won't offer anything. So, if the original xml is still there that means the unit hasn't been rebooted, but if original firmware has been properly added a 1xxx unit will reboot itself while still attached to the PC after Updater.exe completes and generate an xml file incidating to those programs that certain files are missing.

    Secondly, much less likely, that the unit has a damaged flash.

    We can ensure that the correct original firmware is on the unit by doing another flash manually. In the attached compressed folder is 'known-original' V6.20 firmware and Updater.exe.
    • Extract the folder to your Desktop;
    • Open 'UpdateV6.20' folder and drag 097201000620.rgn onto Updater.exe;
    • Enable the radio button for 'USB Device' and put the unit into pre-boot by holding the top LH corner while connecting to a rear usb port of PC;
    • Check that the unit's details appear in the window adjacent and immediately click 'OK' or press enter [it'll say the software's the same blah blah, click thru that message];
    • The flash should start indicated by 'Loader' appearing on the unit's screen you may then release the screen or keep holding until finished. Leave the unit attached until it starts the reboot, disconnect it when the logo screen appears;
    • Clear non-vol or hard reset it if it boots without first asking you to select a locale [it should default to Locale selection though].

    If it's still stuck on the logo splash then you may have a damaged flash memory/corrupt region.
