    Default Partially bricked 265W with

    Hello all,
I updated my firmware on my Garmin Nuvi 265W and loaded the firmware via Updater but now my Garmin is refusing to boot. It is stuck with the Garmin logo displayed on the screen indefinitely without any text showing.
The firmware update process went smoothly and after the successful updating, I immediately removed it from my computer. At that point in time, the symptoms started showing. I can no longer get into pre-boot now. If I connect it to my computer, there is absolutely no response.
Funny thing though is that if I let the battery discharge completely and let it sit for a few minutes, then I plug it in my computer, THEN only I can access the Garmin as a mass storage device.
I had a back up of all the files before flashing. I copied them back but still the Garmin cannot boot.

Does anyone has any advice on what route to pursue next?
    Thanks

Try to format it with RMpreUSB, then copy back your backup.

If reformat won't help, then in pre boot flash with updater again latest version of FW and maybe then will start like it should.

Thanks a lot for your prompt response. I installed the software and followed all the instructions and formatted the drive. I copied my backup to the formatted drive. Unfortunately the problem is remains and I can get into mass storage mode after the battery is completely discharged. Otherwise, the gps refuses to boot and is stuck on the garmin logo.
Pre-boot is a lost cause even after I followed your instruction about pressing (and holding) the top left and power button.

Any ideas of what to do next?
    Thanks

I cannot enter pre-boot no matter what I do. I tried several solutions (based on catymag major thread) but nothing helped.
    I tried the following:
1.Holding the power button and quickly plugging the USB
    2. Holding power and top left and quickly plugging USB
    3. Holding power and top of "RM" in Garmin logo
    4. After full discharge, holding power an powering using USB.

If there is anything that I missed, I would be happy to try some other things for my 265W.

I guess you have Garmin USB drivers installed properly
First drag the .rgn in Updater.exe, both files must be in the same directory, Updater program will open in your desktop.
    Tick USB device.
At this point plug nuvi USB.
Hold the power button, immediately as Garmin logo appears and at the same time press upper left corner.
Updater will display your nuvi model in its window, this is the moment to click ok and Updater will flash firmware.
    More here:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

But before trying to flash .rgn,
!) try to reflash the firmware with Webupdater (be sure battery is charged and Garmin USB drivers installed)
    2) try to remove from nuvi every .img .GCD .gpx .gpi .zip .vpm files then restart it and see if it works.

    Hello Catymag,
I tried webupdate to update after removing all the files except GarminDevices.xml, gmapbmap.img anf gmapbmap.sum. Webupdate was successful in copying GUPDATE.GCD and updating some other local files and voices etc. After updating, when I restart the device, it is stuck again on the boot logo and refuses to boot. I tried the same thing with Garmin Express and same thing happened after a successful update.
I cannot boot the device but I can still get into mass storage if I let the battery drain completely.
Next thing that I tried was getting GarminCure3 and making an original/cure firmware based on the GUPDATE.GCD and I get the RGN file which I try using with Updater.exe. I have all the drivers installed and used Updater before to do a region change. I did enter preboot by holding the battery icon and then plugging it into the computer. The thing is that I cannot enter pre-boot or else all my problems will be solved.
Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it.

You mean that you were PREVIOUSLY able to enter preboot i guess as that method can only be used in a unit which boots up.

Check you have latest Garmin USB driver installed on your PC: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

2x5W will usually go into preboot by holding the top LH corner and then plugging it into a miniUSB lead already connected directly to a REAR port of the PC [not via a hub]. Generally if you can see the start logo you can reach preboot, some units are stubborn and take dozens of attempts. Have latest firmware made as an RGN file and loaded to Updater.exe with it open and visible on your desktop. Select the radio button next to 'USB Device' before attempting preboot. Watch the window next to 'USB Device' for a few seconds after you connect the miniUSB plug and hit the enter key or click 'OK' button on the GUI immediately you see the unit details appear. Try this repeatedly. If successful in reaching preboot, you'll hear the Windows device connection bips as well as see the details in updater.exe window. You must hold the screen at least until 'Loader' or similar message appears on the unit's screen, it's best to hold it until the process finishes if you're not sure when to let go. Ensure that there is no GUPDATE.GCD file in the unit's Garmin folder and remove any SD card from the unit before proceeding.

Thanks for your elaborate response Neil.

Yes, I was able to enter preboot when the device was 100% operational (ie before I attempted the firmware upgrade based on Catymag's tutorial). It is then that the GPS got bricked.
The thing that complicated matters is that if I turn on the GPS, nothing happens. It gets stuck on the logo. If the battery has a charge, plugging on the USB also does nothing, no matter where I press on the screen.
If the battery is empty, then plugging the USB (and holding the top left or anywhere for the matter) puts the garmin directly into mass storage mode and I get it on my computer. It boots directly into mass storage. As you said, I think I got one of the stubborn units.
I'll try some more and see if my luck strikes. Thanks once more.

If nuvi can show Garmin logo it can enter preboot, so read again and with care post n6 or latest Neil's post (he kindly repeated the procedure).
Preboot is the only chanche to unbrick it probably, even because you haven't tried to start it without the files I mentioned in the same post n6.(point2)
