Try flashing the next RGN (without boot.bin).
Also try flashing it AFTER flashing RGN with boot.bin.

It shouldn't. I'm asking if it's detected by updater.exe after reconnecting to the PC.

Just so I'm clear, when I remove the boot.bin from the rgn file, the RGN_Tool says I need something in segment 1. Then when I move the fw_all.bin to segment 1, it says "I hope you know what you are doing!" That's what you want me to do, right? (Section BD02 will be the first firmware section).

I'm so close I don't want to destroy it

You don't need to move anything. You only need to unset specific checkboxes in RGN_Tool and save the result as RGN file.
That "know what you're doing" warning is ok to ignore.
I can make RGN files for you tomorrow if you're too afraid of it.

The Updater did detect it after I updated with the boot.bin only fw. And now, when restarting the device in pre-boot mode, it detects it again. I won't know if it allows me to update until I run the updater again with the next step.

I think you can restart updater.exe after flashing each RGN.

I'm not afraid, RGN Tool just doesn't do what I thought it would do.

If I just uncheck the boot.bin checkbox, it says "Section 1 must be enabled. Normally it should contain section '0800' boot.bin." So I *have* to move the fw_all.bin segment.

    Latest update:
    1) I flashed with boot.bin only fw. "Update successful" - Cannot flash again with restarting to pre-boot mode.
    2) Flashed with fw_all.bin only fw "Update successful" - I can immediately flash boot.bin without restarting.
    3) Flashed with boot.bin fw "Update successful" - Cannot flash again with restarting to pre-boot mode.
    4) Restarted - it's back to "Loading maps..." hang. Woohoo.
    5) Flashed with 0827 cure firmware - IOU_UTILITIES error
    6) Restarted - "Loading maps..." hang

It doesn't show up in RMPrepUSB tool during any of these steps however.

I've repeated the above steps several times, and I'm at step 3 now.

    What's next?

pgardella, can you confirm that flashing RGN with original fw_all.bin only completes successfully, but flashing RGN with the same fw_all.bin, but patched by GarminCure3's CURE option, completes with IOU_UTILITIES error?

Neil , I think we can do this already. But there could be a bigger problem...

I can flash with boot.bin-only RGN successfully. I can flash with fw_all.bin-only RGN successfully. But if I flash with the original (boot.bin & fw_all.bin) run through CURE fails with the IOU_UTILITIES error. I have not tried flashing with fw_all.bin run through CURE. I don't know enough about the firmware to know if this would work or break something worse.
