Thread: Garmin nuvi 1490lmt stuck at splash screen. [Solved].

Ok, I followed the steps as you said and re-wrote the firmware and now the unit rebooted and I got a green progress bar across the bottom and then I got the garmin logo with the picture below of the gps connected to the pc.

How did you flash the firmware?
Did you select the ORIGINAL option and pressed Make firmware?
Did you put the unit into pre-boot mode, executed updater.exe from GarminCure3 by pressing updater.exe button, and used updater.exe for flashing?
If so, then disconnect the unit from the PC

I checked for Garmin/GarminDevice.xml and it is there. I used webupdater to re-install updates to the unit and proceeded to load Garmin Base Camp because it has all of my saved routes. When it loaded, it gave me an error message stating that it couldn't work with the "current.gpx" file. I loaded my routes back to the GPS and I'm now re-loading the most recent map update. It's taking forever-and-a-day to install. It currently is transferring at a rate of 771.2 KB/s.

Nice. Most probably everything is ok now. Except you will have some files missing like maps, custom voices, etc.

button, and used updater.exe for flashing? Yes I found that I had no choice but to put it in pre-boot mode because updater wouldn't connect to it until I did.

After it completed, the unit rebooted and gave a progress bar along the bottom and then the Garmin logo with the icon of the GPS and PC popped up. That is when I started installing the updates and transferring my routes back over but not before verifying that it created the file garmindevice.xml. I'm still skeptical until this thing completes and I find that I can actually power it up and go to the main menu. That is when I will be celebrating. As of now it is a third of the way completed.

Ah yes, you should have checked if it boots completely first. You can still do it. Just cancel all the pending installs and format the flash drive with RMPREPUSB (and create the Garmin folder).

So you want me to wipe the drive again? It just finished the updates and I safely ejected the unit and powered it up. It booted up and started installing all of the files. It asked me to select ok to restart to finalize the updates and so I did. I now have the main menu up and running. I found that it still shows the traces on the map from where I had been. I'm surprised that is still there. Well then. I think I might be good to go now. Now what I need to do is to create an image of the internal drive so that if this happens again, I can just write it back on. I noticed that rmprepusb seems to have an option to write an image of the drive. What would you recommend?

I'm not doing flash drive image backups, I find it quite useless. So I can't suggest anything.
But you can just save the files and copy them back in case of emergency (after optional formatting).

I guess doing an image backup would not have helped my situation anyway come to think of it. Because the problem was apparently with the firmware and that isn't stored on the internal drive.
