Sorry I did not realize you are in europe.
Here in the US the nav and aerial can be had for under $300.00 US.

Also the aerial you are referring to is for the nav and not the one for XM ?
I don't need or want the XM.

Thanks for the reply hopefully this will help the next person.

The aerial is for GPS, xm use another aerial.
The connector is under the right pocket, masked under a big multipole connector light blue.

    Updates...
Tried to connect the gps to a notebook using a USB cable. Installed USB Garmin drivers.
The gps screen shows a page with two big buttons: Garmin Mode and USB Disk Mode
Using Garmin Mode the gps is recognized as NAVI with the correct unit id number. I was unable to read the internal memory.
Using USB Disk Mode i was able to read the sd content as external disk.

If you press the reset button a white page on the gps screen appears, showing lot of data in two column. (like temperature=34 °, Voices=3 etc, etc.) In this page it seems waiting for something... maybe a pre boot mode?

This gps allows reading map images of 4 GB instead the 2 GB limit of 2006-2008 models.

Hope this helps, but i don't see a big interest in this thread.
No Goldwing owner interested in updating maps and fw in all the world? I can't belive it!

That page sounds like what we call the engineering mode in nuvis etc. In many units, when obtaining that mode and then connecting the unit to a PC the pre-boot mode is reached for flashing via updater.exe.

I don't own a GW and no longer have easy access to one, however i'm VERY interested in this thread and surely others are too. In my case i'm still interested [in the absence of a GW] because i'm hopeful that some discoveries may be also relevant to other older Garmin units. Please keep the work going ....

Hi Neil, infact if you push the reset without a pc connected to USB it simply reset and restart.
With a pc connected you can only exit from this mode with power cycling the unit.

Note: After using a large map image it's easy to have internal memory problems.
I.E: unit reset doing a search for a city, unit said "not enough memory" when calculating a route of more than 7-800 km etc.

On the hidden diagnostic menu there are two options:
    Delete user nonvol
    Delete all nonvol
My question is: what's happens if i confirm to delete?
In the first i think i will clear all previous find and saved routes, but the second option?
I don't want to brick my unit...
    Someone can confirm?

In other Garmin units where you have the option to clean NV, it's to clear non-protected non-volatile memory only. A kind of more comprehensive hard-reset is all. That is what i think 'user nonvol' would be, unprotected nonvol, so i also think as you that deleting it would only clear the history and saved routes etc, but nothing crucial. Back to factory settings for sure i guess. But a command to delete all nonvol sounds like everything would be wiped and without at the very minimum full NV backup to restore back, the unit would be screwed in amateur hands. I suspect it's for garmin technicians to start from scratch with a 'clean slate' if things are too badly screwed up. Then the unit would then need total reprogramming. Kunix's take on this will be interesting and informed. Mine is an uneducated guess, 'a stab in the dark' only.

Are you able to backup NV regions to the CF card on these GW navis?

No, not able for the moment, i am reading threads about copying regions to sd cards. I have provided some part of the fw that was already to my old sd card. I will be happy to make a full backup of the unit also to give to Kunix the possibility to work on this fw. But i can't figure how.

It's interesting that there are three levels of clearing data on the unit.
One is in the normal menu and affects only system settings Time, date, timezone etc. All will be restored to original settings but routes and favorites are still here.
Second is in the service menu Clear user nonvol and also for me it will erase favorites and routes and maybe satellite acquisition details forcing the unit to redo a search (so do this in open spaces and let enough time to the unit to re store the celestial data).
Third is the Clear all nonvol that, i think, fills the whole nonvol memory with zeros.

Yes later unit so yours uses SD card, i forgot which one was which. Try using the command rrgn but with 2:/ as the path. Not all garmin units identify the media card as 1, some old nuvis [3x0 for example] and even some new 2013 nuvis use 2 for the card.

    Brrrrr!

    New function.
It was told that those type of gps can only read from sd. False.
In the service menu there are a setting: Logging recording (or something similar) that can be set on and off.
It's different from enabling track log in the system menu, track log draw a point on the map every xxx meters. This function records data to the nonvol memory and has limited space for recording.
Log record create a directory on the sd:/Garmin called Logs. Every time you set on the logging software after the power cycling, a subdirectory will be created. The name of this dir will be yyyymmdd_hhmmss. Inside the dir will be created two files: navi.bin and traffic.bin
Those files record all the gps are doing until the function will be set to off. The only space limit is due to the sd card capacity.
I just enabled and disabled the function without moving the bike so not a big log was created. The files opened with a hex editor starts with NAVLog... and TRFLog....
If i remember well the next item in the service menu allow to read the logs.
I will try to create a log during next trip.
