Default Zumo 660 Won't Boot Past Splash Screen, and other problems

All right, I've searched and searched to try and work my way out of the pickle I got myself into, but cannot find anything. So, I humbly ask for help here...

Garmin Zumo 660, was completely updated to SW 4.80

It was an OEM model with a motorcycle manufacturer splash screen. I got sick of the screen, and wanted to get rid of it, so I ventured into the world of RGN_Tool and GIR_Editor.

Thought I had everything set up, made the RGN file with the new logo.bin merged into it, deleted any GUPDATE.gcd file on the unit and flashed it through updater.exe. All looked good, until it was clear I was in a boot loop. Would update software 'til about 12%, then try and update again to 100%. Then "boot loader" appeared on the screen and it would start all over.

Made a cure rgn with version 4.80, however, I couldn't get the unit into "pre-boot" mode. Flashed it anyway, and this is where things really went bad. Now the Garmin slash screen comes on for about 3 seconds and the unit powers off.

If I attach it via USB, I can see mass storage mode. And update everything through Webupdater, but updater.exe is not seeing any USB devices attached to the computer. It is quite bizarre.

    Couple of questions.

    • Is there anyway to just wipe the firmware clean and start from scratch?
    • Does anyone know how to get this unit into "pre-boot"? Tried holding down the power button, and nothing happened. This was the case before the flashing nightmare, and I can't get another GOOD Zumo 660 into pre-boot either (I have access to a friends).

One more bizarre thing, tried two USB cables, and two different computers, and I can't get updater.exe to recognize the bad unit, or the good unit, either.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

You must install garmin usb drivers from garmin page on every computer that you will try.
Add finger in uper left corner and updater.exe will see your unit.

crazedleo says he made an RGN file and flashed it. So, I guess, the USB drivers are OK.

    He say also

I couldn't get the unit into "pre-boot" mode. Flashed it anyway
How can you flash over updater.exe if you cant go in pre boot?

If you use cure FW, then you must now flash with original FW over updater.exe

    Hey, thanks for the replies.

I have come to the conclusion that the finger-in-the-upper-left thing works with Nuvi units only. I have tried it on my friend's good Zumo 660, and it doesn't get into pre-boot when I touch the upper left part of the screen.

USB drivers are good. I can see all my files in the Garmin folder on the unit -- including hidden ones. Plus, Webupdater, and Garmin Communicator both see the unit. I can see it in OSX, and in the Windows 8 VM through Parallels. I just can't see it through updater -- even with the finger trick.

When it is plugged in, all I see is the splash screen I loaded into the logo.bin file originally. There is no progress bar, or indicator that it is plugged into a computer.

Like I said, I am at a loss because it is exhibiting some bizarre behavior.

USB drivers are not related to the mass storage mode and viewing files on the internal flash drive. WebUpdater, if started without command line options, also detects devices by reading GarminDevice.xml on the flash drive. Moreover, generally, most of Garmin devices communicate with help of Garmin USB drivers ONLY when put into pre-boot mode or when "System Software Missing" is displayed, which forces pre-boot without user interaction. Otherwise they just go into the mass storage mode. So your examples are unrelated.

Therefore, make sure you've installed this:
    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Also one clever man has just told me that pre-boot mode is accessed in the following way:
    1) Make sure the device is turned off completely by pressing the power button long enough.
    2) Press and hold the very LOWER LEFT LCD corner.
    3) Connect the device to the PC.
    4) Press the power button until the device is turned on, then release it.

Kunix, thanks for the info. I reinstalled the drivers from the link you sent, and rebooted my machine.

Let's try the Safe-Boot thing. Since I have a 100% working Zumo 660 as well, I tried the method you outlined. Here are the steps and my observations.

    1) Completely power down the Zumo
    2) Press lower left part of LCD screen.
2.5) Open battery door to gain access to USB port on Zumo.
    3) Connect the device to the PC.
    4) Press power button and the following happens:

Garmin splash screen appears, keep holding LCD and power button.
Screen calibration dot appears in center top of LCD screen.
Calibration dot disappears and Garmin splash screen appears again.
PC picture indicating it is connected appears on LCD, along with the green progress line.
    Progress line completes.
Garmin splash screen with PC picture.
Still cannot see the unit in updater.exe.

Again, this is with the 100-percent working Zumo.

When I try your method with the defunct model, the Garmin splash screen appears, and stays once I have it hooked to the PC. But nothing else appears on the screen.

    Again, thank you.

For pre boot you must add magnet beside usb conector (this simulate closed antena )

Try hold only ON button for pre boot.

Well, maybe it's a wrong way. But also it could be that USB drivers installation takes too long. To ensure that USB drivers are installed, you can try entering pre-boot mode one more time, or better do the following: take a healthy zumo, boot it completely, press the battery icon until an engineering menu appears, then connect the device to the PC and wait until updater.exe detects it.
Also when the screen calibration dot appears, you've definitely failed to enter the pre-boot mode, so you may stop.

When he conect nuvi to Pc in menu over battery icon, nuvi will automatic jump in mass storage.
Somethin is changed in FW 4.80 and pre boot over baterry icon don't work, but always nuvi jump to mas storage.
