Have you dragged the (Firmware) gupdate.gcd in it?
    Read again please.

And if I check off the box (e.g. for Sect. 1) and try a 'save' then I get an empty (0 byte) file.
Of course, because you've got nothing loaded. You must first OPEN an RGN or GCD file to see it's various BIN files. To do that either drag the file onto RGN_Tool.exe OR open RGN_Tool and drag and drop the file onto the GUI's 'File Drop Zone' OR open RGN_Tool and press 'File' > 'Open RGN/GCD' [or press the big 'Folder' Icon below 'File' button] then browse to the required firmware file. When you have the fw file open, press the 'Save' button on the first section holding 'boot.bin' and save it as 'Ldr.bin' to use with your text command. [More than one way to skin a cat ].

If you're still stuck, here it is anyway. Extract the rar file to find Ldr.bin.

Now we're getting to the root of my problem. I do not have a RGN or GCD file (to my knowledge).

I was looking for ways to back up whatever possible before installing new firmware to allow me to work with unlocked maps. I found my way to the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and first step sent me to this thread.

Where should I have gotten an RGN/GCD file? Is that from a later part of the Universal Firmware patcher process? Or is it something that I could get via regular channels (from Garmin) if I could circumvent 'Garmin Express'?

The RGN or GCD is the firmware package; you have to find the correct one (with correct version that you want) for your unit. It's usually from Garmin but there are sites with backup of it.

May be you find it in your nuvi, if you updated it at least once with GE.
But look at attached file in Neil's post, he extracted the ldr.bin for you.
    Here nuvi 26x9 C4 8.30 firmware

For any people who just grab the download without looking at the page source, you should read what is in the comments at the top so I've pasted below (I'm a bit amazed that catymag knew where to find this... the power of crowdsourced knowledge):

NOTE FOR USERS WANTING TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE ON ONE COMPUTER AND THEN INSTALL IT TO THEIR
    DEVICE USING A DIFFERENT COMPUTER:

    1) To download the region file used by WebUpdater, copy and paste this link into your browser
    on computer #1:

    hxxp://download.garmin.com/software/B1948000K.GCD

    2) Bring B1948000K.GCD to computer #2 where your device is attached.

3a) Then you can drag-and-drop B1948000K.GCD onto the WebUpdater icon on your desktop.

3b) Or you can invoke WebUpdater at the command line, passing in the region file as a parameter:

    C:\>WebUpdater.exe c:\path\to\B1948000K.GCD
Now I'm on the right track.

    All explained here

but people never read tutorials so the knowledge (of forum members, not mine) is rarely shared

Ha, information overload! I've already spent hours reading these forums. Just the wrong stuff apparently. Eventually...

    Hi,

I tried to backup NV on my Nüvi 68.

In Garmin\Updater\2088, update.log does not show Parsing "rrgn,41,1:/41_backup.bin" but Parsing "rrgn,41,1:/41.bin" instead.

And no 41_backup.bin file is present at the root of SD card with Garmin directory.

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

So I suppose backup hasn't worked, has he ?

    try:
    rrgn,41,2:/41.bin
    reboot
    or
    rrgn,154,2:/154.bin
    reboot

Backup name is what you type in update.text
