    I have both a Nuvi 885T and an 855.
The main difference between these two units is the 885T is Bluetooth functional with a cellphone.
Both units have their latest version firmware version installed which is version 4.7
I may be wrong but I think boh of these units have the same hardware/PCB inside.
Both units have a remote button to activate the Voice Recognition feature.
I think the remote buttons are probably bluetooth devices.

if all the hardware is there it should be possible to turn the 855 into an 885T

From the diagnostic screen i get this info:

    Nuvi 885T
    PCB P/N NA
    PCB Version 9
Unit ESN/Unit ID (unit specific ID number)
    Flash 1 035344535430344780402b439600823f
    Flash 2 NA
    Voice Count 50

    Nuvi 855
    PCB P/N NA
    PCB Version 9
Unit ESN/Unit ID (unit specific ID number)
    Flash 1 035344535430344780409d8eeb00933f
    Flash 2 NA
    Voice Count 50

If I download the latest version of the latest 4.7 firmware and extract them the each have a file named: B072600.update
So can I further assume from this that the hardware on both units is the same.

I am new at this so if my suspicions are correct can I just flash the 855 unit with the 885T firmware and turn it into an 885T ?

The thing is these are Linux based 'nuvis', quite unlike the Garmin proprietary OS devices we're used to. I see that your 8x5 units have the same HWID of 0726 and the PCB P/N shows as NA. Maybe that's an abbreviation for North America [i know your units are localized NA] or maybe it means Not Applicable. Conventional Garmin OS units have a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] in the format of 105-xxxxx-xx. For instance 3790 and 3490 both have PCB of 105-01652-00 which is why we can cross-flash the US/EU 34xx fw to 37xx even though the HWIDs are different.

In other words, I dunno. Maybe Loly does?

Sorry! But you already have the same SW in both unit!
Only patching SW may be useful like for 37xx. And Bluetooth hardware may be absence as fact.
Garmin, how much is 30 pieces of silver for Judas today? Were they worthy for crucifix of GPSPower?

I'm sure you're correct Giomen. The 800 series are probably no different to any other series where they use the same fw but hw differs. e.g. 1450 and 1490 where the latter has BT hardware added but otherwise they're the same.

To confirm the discussion concerning 855 vs 885T hardware, I decided to diasassemble the two Nuvis and have a look.
The 855 and the 885T both use the same PCB P/N 105-01093-00 ver 9, but the 885 has three addiitional integrated circuits mounted on the board.
That essentially confirms hardware differences between the two units to accomodate bluetooth and probably traffic.
    Thanks for all your comments.

All 8xx including 8x0 can receive traffic with an external traffic receiver [GTM 20/21]. It's just that the 885T had the receiver bundled with it, hence the 'T' suffix behind the model number. Hardware wise, all of them have ASR function and the 88x have BT which the 85x don't. Software wise, the 8x5 have SLI, LA & JCV lacking in 8x0 and that's maybe the only mod possible i suppose, enabling those functions in 8x0.
