    If there is nothing on the card for the unit to read that message would not seem surprising perhaps? As to the other card(s) you tried, were they formatted with a PC or Mac? Some methods of formatting in FAT32 (there are more than one way, even with windows) are not easily recognised by some garmin units. I'd be trying again with the new card with the appropriate fw and img files on it (without reformatting first as the factory format should be universally readable). The other card(s) you tried may have been previously reformatted in FAT32 but in a way that garmin doesn't easily handle. You could try the older card(s) formatted using the tool from this thread: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. I've used RMPRepUSB to reformat sd cards and even a microdrive which couldn't even be read in windows and also for the internal memory of de-bricked nuvis. If you continue to have a problem with both the new card in it's original factory format and the older card(s) reformatted with RMPRepUSB and you are sure the instructions in Post #1 have been followed, you have at least eliminated the card format and need to look elsewhere for the problem.

    Thanks for the tips but my friend lives several hundred miles away so it may be some time before we can attempt again. I will save this info and fwd to him. I will reply back here when we do reattempt. I am curious if anyone was sucessful with a larger card though. Had I not been staring at the screen while waiting for fw update I would have missed it. Message was only there for a second.

    He's another thought. gcscott01 states in Post #1 that he used a 4 GiB card for his update to 4.6 and he also used a 4 GiB card for the 4.5 update. See here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Garmin fw versions are always cumulative not progressive, but if a version earlier than 4.5 enables the unit to read a card larger than 2 GiB then it would explain the 'Unable to read CF card' message if a fw earlier than that one was on the unit. Just a shot in the dark, but if that's the case it should update ok using a 2 Gib card, and you could also try to do it progressively, >4.50>4.60. Good luck, looking forward to your report.

    Is there a way to downgrade the firmware again (restore original)? I did the update but now the verbal prompts are reversed, turn left when you should turn right.

    @iNigel
    If you have the earlier fw you could try doing the downgrade (as gupdate.gcd in a Garmin folder on an otherwise empty CF card) using the reset method from [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] here. Can't say it will work for sure though. Let us know how you go.

    @overman2088
    Where have you found EU v2.60 fw? Can you post the fw somewhere and/or give a link? I'll then have a look at it for you, but i'd suggest don't attempt to load it to a US GW navi unit until it's checked for compatibility.

    This fw is for HWID 0504, the US navi units are HWID 0265. Maybe you can cross-flash the fw with the original HWID but it may cause problems if the physical hardware is not identical. You could try a custom GUPDATE.GCD combining the US boot.bin with the EU fw_all.bin and see if that will flash ok. You may have to try to force the update using the reset method from this post [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. This is risky stuff because afaik the GW navis cannot be accessed in preboot mode to flash with an .rgn file, so if you brick it your navi may well be dead. I know ppl have gone the other way to get NT map capability (ie loaded US fw 4.6 to EU units) but some have been disappointed with the overall results, especially those who drive on the left (UK etc.). No one posting here has so far reported flashing EU on a US navi. As for the RU voice you are right, it won't work on your US navi because the voice file is not present. It would have to be added somehow, and it may not be possible to do easily. Think carefully before attempting this flash.

    Does this device have SD:/sys.bin present? If so then this is the main firmware. You can replace this file with any other fw_all.bin (while changing HWID appropriately, of course) and try to run it.
