Looks like a case of 'what's old is new again'. Similar to the old copy protection used by Atari etc. Cheap and easy to implement but hard to overcome by the consumer. Be thankful for small mercies if that's the case, because at least additional maps work (mostly).

Of more specific interest would be if someone could say just how the Goldwing fw now enables those units to read NT maps, and see if that can be used in other older 'non-NT' units by similarly modding their fw. Of course if the GW units already had that ability built-in and it was simply 'unlocked' by the newer fw then this is of no further use if other older hardware is lacking that, presumably. But what if it has some sort of NT de-encription built into the fw? Sounds like a job for a bright but bored young expert .There are plenty of bright ones around this forum, but are they bored enough??

You would have to go through the firmware program, line by line, and remove the line that says to read (XXX) at data block (XXX) on the CF card. This is way beyond my skill level. I have the time to do this but not the knowledge to do so. Young programing talent is needed here.!The firmware file is 3,542KB but finding that one line (XXX) and remove it, if that is what Garmin is doing? Greg

Well... you really have 3 options:
don't update the fw & put up with outdated non-NT maps with full functions,
update and buy new NT maps with full functions,
or update and use 'unlocked' NT maps with limited search functions.
    Nice to have a choice

Well I would rather put up with the non-searchable POIs. I think the updated map is more important to me. Maps older than 2 years need updated. You can still see the closest PIOs on the screen. The old non-NT maps are unreliable for roads and PIOs anyway.

I have been trying to verify what I think may be the problem with poi searches. I have been trying to obtain the number of pois in 2012.40 and the release version that Garmin placed on the cf card (2011.1) along with firmware 4.60. I believe that the total number of pois is the root of the problem. Also would like to determine number of pois on the original release cf card and the update version from 2009. (non NT versions) Does anyone have the answer?

I am currently running 4.5 on an '08 wing with non-NT Garmin Topo US running. I purchased the Topo USA dvd and unlocked and installed it onto a cf card from my laptop. If I update the firmware to 4.6 and then reinsert my CF card with the non-NT topo maps will they work as before or will I need to purchase new NT maps? Thanks!

Other Garmin units able to run NT maps can also run non-NT. It's vice versa that's the problem. Can't see any reason why the 4.60 fw would be unable to read non-NT, that would make no sense at all.

Firmware Ver 4.60 will run both NT and non-NT maps on your Garmin GPS.

It will also up-date the Canadian GPS unites but you will no longer have French language, just English for voice. Nothing is out for any other language.

I have a 06 Wing and updated the firmware to 4.60 installed the 2012.40 img file and like everybody else I got the grayed out keyboard. So I copied my old map file to it and was going to switch between cards to use the search option that way. I then copied the file gmapprom.img to a another card so that I would have the updated maps. Well all the smaller roads did not appear I tried another download and got the same thing. For some reason I pulled the card with the unit still on and renamed the file to gmapsupp.img and reinstalled it into the unit while it was still on. It showed the little window Loading Maps and guess what everything works with the new maps no grayed out keyboard. Have not a clue to what happened but maybe someone else can duplicate it and figure it out. Hope this is helpful to someone

Some of the best discoveries are made accidentally, lol. It would seem that 'hot plugging' the map card maybe enables something to allow the new map to be fully compatible with the fw update and thus fully enable search(?). If you could verify that this 'enabling' is permanent for the new map, i.e. that hot plugging does not have to be repeated after the unit is powered down and rebooted, that would appear to confirm some kind of fw initializing. Either way, if this is not a one-off fluke and works with any NT map, it's a nice find champ.
