    Default Honda Goldwing 2006-2008 Navi GPS Firmware Update Versions 4.60 & 4.70

    [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]Convert Garmin GPS from NON-NT files to NT files (may work with other Garmin GPS units???)

    This file updates the Honda Goldwing 2006-2008 Navi GPS firmware to be able to use the new GARMIN NT. MAPS along with NON-NT MAPS. The new version is 4.60 and only works on Honda Goldwing model years 2006-2008 motorcycles made in the USA and use a 2GB Compact Flash Card (CF card). A new 2GB CF card will work or a 4GB CF card will also work but is not needed. I used a 4GB card due to not finding a 2GB card at the store.

    Step 1. Remove your old card from the GPS unit in the Goldwing trunk (see your manual for instructions) and keep it for a backup.

    Step 2. Copy the file gupdate.gcd to your new CF card BY ITSELF in a folder called GARMIN. That's the only file that should be on the card...just a folder and a file. It doesn't matter what the card itself is named. Rename file 4.60gupdate.gcd to only gupdate.gcd

    Step 3. BEFORE you put the card back in the GPS, power up the bike (accessory is fine) and don't press the ENTER button when prompted by the GPS. NOW go around to the trunk and stick the CF card in. Now then...be patient. When you put the card in, the GPS will set there for a little while with just the default Navigation logo screen. It looks like it's not doing anything, but be patient...don't turn the key off. It will eventually read the card and pull the update file into the GPS unit. A small black box at the bottom of the screen will eventually load and show you what's going on. When it's done, the GPS will reboot itself. You can check and make sure that the version number under System Info is now 4.60 Turn bike off.

    Step 4. Now go take your new CF card back to your PC and add the latest NT. MAP FILES on to the CF card. Put the new CF card with the maps back in the GPS and you should be good to go with your new NT. maps. Version 4.60 also works with your old Garmin non-NT maps.

    Note: Garmin did something so you can't search for POIs. The keyboard screen is grayed out (non-functional). You can look at the POIs by distance closet first, this function is working. Everything with the GPS is working just fine. Hasn't rebooted so far.

    Enjoy and ride safe.

    I tried your instructions and the firmware installed to 4.60. I then put the 2012.40 maps on the card and put the card back into the bike. I rec'd a msg stating that it couldn't unlock the maps. Any ideas?

    Best to do it with a copy of the *.img on PC rather than in the card itself. Keep the original locked image in case anything goes wrong. Unlock the copy on your PC using FIU and then transfer the unlocked image to the card.

    Okay I got the 4.60 on with the 2012.40 maps. All seems well however, just as before, I cannot do a POI search by name. The keyboard blanks out. But if I install the card that Garmin sent with the 4.60 and 2011.10 maps I CAN do a POI search by name. What gives?

    This is only the firmware for your GPS. You have to use your own maps or download them from somewhere??? and unlock them.

    The POIs do not work even if you download the 2011.10 maps and save them to a new CF card. Garmin must of put something in a particular data block on the CF card. When you write data to the CF card you overwrite this block and that is how Garmin is trying to copy protect the CF card. The data is written one block next to each other like in a straight line and you can't change the way the data is saved to the CF card. That is my best guess.

    Maybe someone with more experience can help out, but I think they would need an original CF card from Garmin.

    @tehodge
    You could try an original MapSource Version or a gmap folder of the 2012.40 map to load an image directly to a CF card using [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. Go to the map thread for one of those map versions, and to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], scroll down to 'Have you downloaded a Mapsouce Map version?' or 'Have you downloaded a Mapsource Gmap folder?' for help using them. More general help here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and in the MS thread. If you still don't have full search functions with an image freshly generated by MS, the problem is that ALL maps are going to be deficient in that way other than the Garmin supplied CF card ones.

    I've used MapInstall & MapSource 6.16.3 and still same problem. I guess Garmin got us on this one.

    I tried many different map version downloads and no luck. I think it is the way Garmin formatted the CF card and placement of map data on particular block locations. This is an old copy protection scheme used back in the early 1980's when the placement of data had to be stored in a certain data block (on a floppy disk) which could not be relocated or the program did not load or work. Like now as an example on a hard drive where you have data blocks that can't be moved during a defrag.
