    ........
    Background facts and preparation:
    • The unit is in pre-boot during the period before the white calibration screen is shown.
    • If a flash is not initiated in that period it exits pre-boot to the calibration mode.
    • The pre-boot period varies depending on the model, for some Garmin units it's as short as 10 seconds and always exits if a timely flash is not initiated.
    • [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] must be loaded on the PC for the unit to be accessed by Updater.exe in pre-boot mode, if not sure just load again.

    Step by Step Instructions:

Please take a deep breath and go slow. The only time you need be quick is for Points 7 & 8, otherwise take your time but follow this precisely:
    1. Drag the cure3 rgn file onto Updater.exe
    2. Leave Updater's GUI visible on the PC Desktop with the Radio Button enabled for 'USB Device'
    3. Position the mouse cursor over 'OK' on the GUI
    4. Connect the USB cable directly to a rear port of the PC [don't use a hub or front port]
    5. Ensure zumo is fully off
    6. Press and hold the lower left corner of the zumo's screen then press and hold the power button
    7. Quickly connect the USB cable to the zumo [release power button when zumo turns on] while watching the window next to 'USB Device' on Updater's GUI
    8. Immediately you see the zumo's details appear in the window click 'OK' or press Enter key on the PC keyboard
    9. Don't release the screen at least until you see 'Loader' or 'Software Loading' or similar message on the zumo screen [or just hold it for the entire flashing process if you want]

The unit should then be shown in Mass Storage Mode, so make a backup of the file system now. After, delete the guilty file/s if you know what caused it to brick. If you don't know then use RMPrepUSB to reformat it and after formatting create a folder named Garmin in the root. Safely disconnect from PC. Again enter pre-boot and flash the original firmware which should allow it to boot normally. Read again the initial post in this thread very carefully.

    @Qdshayes
It's always like that when a new user comes here with a bricked device, nobody reads Updater.exe instructions with care. That's why I linked that previous thread, to show you how it usually goes but Neil was so kind to repeat all again
Try and retry till you don't get it, even because it's the only one chance you have to revive it, alternative is sending it to Garmin ($ and a refusbished unit back)

    Hi Neil,

Thank you so much for your helpful, detailed instructions and your patience. I think I'm 80% of the way there...

It may be that I have made an error in the reformatting, or somewhere else, but when the device starts now (which it does, hurrah!), it doesn't notice that it's connected to the PC and the PC can't see it. Any ideas where I've gone wrong?

Thanks again for your invaluable help, this is a learning curve for me.

Restart from scratch with kunix's cure.
After loading cure pc should see zumo.
Reformat following this tuto: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
After formatting create a folder named Garmin in the root. Safely disconnect from PC. Again enter pre-boot and flash the original firmware by updater.exe which should allow it to boot normally.

    @catymag

Again, thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated. Forgive my ignorance, but I have hopefully only one more question. When you say "create a folder named Garmin in the root", can you explain that for me please?

    Many thanks.

After formatting zumo, it will be completely empty, create in it a Garmin directory.
After loading the original firmware, restarting the device, NV will create in it the garmindevice.xml file.
It is needed to repopulate your zumo with Webupdater or Garmin Express.

Thank you catymag. I've followed your directions to the letter as far as I can tell, but once the Original firmware is reinstalled, Windows cannot see the Zumo and the Zumo acts as if it isn't connected to the PC?

Do you have a backup of zumo files?
From where you got the firmware you loaded?
Which firmware (original) have you installed?
Are you sure firmware HWID is ok for your zumo?

Edit, lol another question: what bricked it?

Yes, I do have a backup. The firmware is Zumo660_GCDFile_510.gcd.
I believe it's compatible with the unit, it's the version it selected for itself when it crashed...

    Garmin Express crashed it?
I know it should be ok but just to be sure, look at garmin device.xml in Garmin folder in your backup and look at these lines at the beginning:

    Code:
Please Login or Register to see the links
Where 0xxx is your firmware HWID.
    zumo660_GCDFile__510.gcd is 924

If cure+formatting by RMPrepUSB+flashing original fw, doesn't work sorry I'm afraid you need kunix here
