Default Turn your Nuvi 510 into a Zumo 220

The hardware of the zumo 220 and the nuvi 510 is the same. Don't try this if you have dissimilar hardware.
Also try at your own risk. There may be a way back using a "cure RGN".

This method is based on the "How to convert 3790us to 3790 Sg/My" thread on this forum. I am also using a patched RGN from firmware with 2 sections. Some words can be found there regarding "cure RGN"

    What do you need?
    1) Download N5xx firmware and Zumo firmware from for example [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
    2) RGNTool
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
How to use RGNTool? See the RGN tool website.
    3) Garmin Updater.exe
See the "Garmin Updater.exe v.2.8.0" thread on this forum

    Getting Started
    A) RGN tool
Open Zumo firmware either in GCD (or RGN). At Overrides make sure none is
    ticked.
    1. At fw_all.bin section, select Save. Zumo firmware fw_all.bin is saved at the
    specified folder.
    2. Open Nuvi firmware either in GCD (or RGN).
At fw_all.bin section, select Load and select Zumo fw_all.bin that has been
    saved earlier.
3.Take note of HWID for boot.bin (or select and copy). At this point HWID for
boot.bin (Nuvi HWID) is different from HWID for fw_all.bin (Zumo HWID).
4.At Overrides, tick HWID, and replace it with boot.bin HWID which is the original
    firmware's HWID (= Nuvi value 723).
    5. Finally save to RGN.
    B) Updater.exe
Reach preboot mode (for a Nuvi 510 this can be done by touching the battery icon until you enter a diagnostics screen)
tick USB mode ,drag&drop the .rgn in updater icon, flash your gps

    Result
You now have a Zumo/Nuvi hybrid and are now capable of e.g. disabling the annoying recalculation feature. It's annoying to bikers who need to follow a preloaded route...
Garmin still sees your gps as a Nuvi 510 and will try to install a recent Nuvi firmware.
You probably don't want that if you've gone to all this trouble...
Also move your maps to the .System folder and move the GPX, Text and Vehicle folders outside the Garmin folder and put them in the root of the Garmin drive letter using e.g. the explorer of your operating system.

I also had an annoying message at boot time:
" FM Traffic Provider database missing. Go to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to download it ."
    Here's how to fix that:
put your GarminDevice.xml in a USB drive , Garmin folder, edit it in the first lines to prevent it download the sw update and run webupdater, it will detect your USBdrive as your nuvi and will download the traffic provider file in the pendrive.
After that, put the file in the right position on nuvi-
Probably it will create the right folder too in your USBdrive , or look at the GarminDevice.xml to find the right path

    Many thx to catymag...
Some clarifications and extra points to consider before you do this conversion. See [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

So someone stole my Nuvi 500, I bought the zumo 220 because I already have a few mounts for the Nuvi 500 and they share the same casing. Seems just the software is different and the Zumo has bluetooth. Anyway, I found the Nuvi after the fact (doh).

What I want to know is, what would happen if I completely clear the nuvi data and copy all the info from the zumo onto the Nuvi? Will I have all the extra features? I don't expect to have bluetooth obviously but will I have MC mode and the fuel gauge and different screen info page?

I understand they share the same motherboard with the only difference being the software and the added bluetooth chip.

Will I end up bricking the Nuvi if I try it and not be able to bring it back to life after if it doesn't work?

Finally! I knew I wasn't crazy to think this was possible. Do you have motorcycling mode on your hybrid? Do you have the gas gauge feature and the added functionality for extra data? Can you change the readouts of the lower left and right data points as with the zumo 220?

Sorry for all the questions but I was too cheap to buy the zumo 220 so I bought the Nuvi 500 when it was on sale for $150, then my nuvi was stolen so I found the zump 220 used for practically the same price. After all was said and done I found my Nuvi (it wasn't stolen, I was just a schmuck).

I lent the nuvi to a friend, looks like I'll have to get it back and try this myself.
