    updates:

    * I did the reflashes. I used the "hard" way -- using gupdate.gcd and garmin's copy2card tool, as I could not get updater.exe to detect my gps -- to take this route, the gcd should contain both parts of the original fw, plus the logo.bin part. One thing to note is that the version number has to be changed to enable the flash (can be either smaller or larger). The good news is that the OEM logo is gone now. But there are problems:
-- the ones supplied by ddabcd277 contained corrupted images. (I think the images are corrupted, because the display is garbled, and when loading into GIR_Editor, it could see the dimensions of the image, but then suffers an overflow -- symptom consistent with corrupted image.)
-- I searched further and found logo.bin from 1377 and 2x5 (by the way my apologies -- apparently someone had asked similar questions a year ago; my search did not use all the right keywords), and the one for 2x5 were actually usable (I was even able to replace the image), but the size is 480x212 instead of 480x272, thus it leaves the lower part of the screen without any skin (default background, which unfortunately is white in full brightness).
-- GIR_Editor would not allow replacement of image with different size. So without a valid template I could not make anything 480x272 work.

    * The change actually also seems to have changed available menu items. The rental car stuff is gone. I also removed the gmappoem.img from the device; I think it is the map for rental car returns, which was gone anyway. And what got me excited for a minute is that I now have the "change splash screen" option! But unfortunately, trying to use it to set a picture as splash (even with exact the same size) would freeze the device and requires a reset. So it is there but not usable. (I suspect it might have something to do with my installing a logo with mismatched size to begin with.)

    * Thanks to nick_11, I was able to get into diagnostic menu. There I have the splash flagged as "Fail" and one FTL image as "Error"; I suppose these are due to the mismatched splash size? Other entries look fine.

So it seems that what I really need now is a logo.bin template with 480x272 image size ... and then everything would be perfect.

ddabcd277 -- could you give me a link to the original firmware that you used to extract the logos? I suspect maybe the file got messed up during upload/download; I wonder if I do the extraction locally things might be different. Thanks!

BTW I just noticed your thread from last year ... were you able to fully resolve the issue?

Someone at FixYa asked the same question. One suggestion is to get the rgn file of a regular 660 and use updater.exe to load -- which then overwrites existing FW completely, as opposed to gupdate.gcd which only does the job partially.
Is this true? if so where to get them?

Sorry to hear that. I thought there is not problem with that logos. Here are the dumps:

Just to mention that the most important thing is the header of the logo. I think no problem with. So it seems it needs a little bit of a manual work for you to success. Try to prepare yourself one 480x272 logo by using the header from the logos of 660/670 + an bmp image RGB 565. Look at how 2x5/2x5w/13xx logos are formed or the topic on the gpspassion regarding RGN_Tool (page 20). I can upload the logos of 2x5/2x5w/13xx if you wish.

    Cheers,

    Hi ddabcd277 --

Thanks a lot for the super prompt response ...

I downloaded the files and they are bin files. What tool should I use to extract the logo bins? Thanks again!

I've got 2x5 and 1377 firmwares and extracted the logo.bin files. Both are 480x212 though. the 2x5 one is what I am using right now but it is not full size. Is 2x5W different?

Hex Editor. Search for GARMIN BITMAP 01.

Bingo! Different size. The logo of 2x5w is 480x272. The header is also for nuvi 2x5w:

If you can't manage I think I can prepare you one using the 660 header if the size of nuvi 660 is 480 x 272.

Sorry for being so thick -- how do I figure out the size of the log.bin part?

    2x5W is also 480x212, according to GIR_Editor.

Very sorry!!! My mistake. Yes, the logo of nuvi 2x5w is 480x212. Even I got confused. Aren't both units with same screen size 480x272? So for nuvi 600 the logo must be 480x272 not like 2x5w 480x212. Am I right? Hmm....

" BTW I just noticed your thread from last year ... were you able to fully resolve the issue? "

I came up with a file that works somewhat

Shows full Garmin screen at first then when maps are loading a white bar..( in day ) is at the bottom with garmin logo on top

It also added splash screen option, but with the same problem you have...if you try to change splash it will freeze

If you want to use this logo bin or full rgn ( fw 490) you cam PM me your email.....I will sent it to you....( logo was from China and changed logos for US......480x212 )

TCIII -- I think we are in the same situation. I remember reading that you used the 2x5 logo as the base. I did the same. The initial "full screen" is not really full; it looks full because the background is black at that time. Once the "default skin" is loaded, which is white in day time and blue at night, it becomes clear that the logo image is too small.

Someone at FixYa commented that if one can get a full non-OEM rgn (not gupdate.gcd) and load it to the device, it will overwrite everything... Question is where to find it -- garmin certainly does not provide it.

ddabcd277 -- You have been a tremendous help. Thanks a lot.

I am not sure if 480x272 should be the size for the 660, but the files you posted for 660/670, although GIR_Editor could not process them, it did show the image size to be 480x272. It might make sense to have a smaller logo image in some 4.3" units because some info is displayed on the lower half of the screen during boot-up. For 660 the info is displayed in white letters with black outline, so I suppose it is assumed to be over an arbitrary wallpaper.

If you could teach me how to determine the size to extract for the logo.bin file (or a pointer to some info about the file format/structure) it would be great. I can give it another try to see if I could actually load a 480x272 logo.

    Thanks again.
