Please, i cant turnon my device on a pre boot mode, so i cant access to my unit to insert the cure rgn. Any advice?

I have a nuvi 255w and (unfortunately) i loaded a map from internet, i named gmapprom1.img (i saw it somewhere) and.... the unit doesnt start... when turning on, shows the loading maps text for a few seconds and turns off. When conecting to PC, happens the same, loading maps text for fex seconds and turns off and turns on and off in a cicle.

    Read lots of forums:

1.First tried to reset by turning on the device and click the screen on botton-right corner. nothing happens. with and without sd.
    2. pre boot ? move and hold for 8 seconds the power button, and the same happens, loading maps text for seconds and turns of. with and w/o sd. So...cant pre boot mode.

I really cant access to unit to perform any cure you mentioned. If i only could access from my pc to the unit, and delete the (unfortunately) wrong gmapprom1.img file...

Please, if you can give one extra advice or should i go for other unit? i loved my 255, all my pois, places, etc i would hate to loose it. And promise not to do such copy paste again. Thanks in advance.

Ok, one of the two files should help. Don'd know which one as you didn't wrote your HwID:
    For 827 is this one:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    For 1091:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Instructions:
Copy one of the files (GUPDATE.GCD) on an SD to folder x:/Garmin/ and plug the SD card in the nuvi. Wait till the firmware flashes. Then you should have access to the memory and you could delete the problematic file (s).

If that is ok then you could flash with normal FW and everything whould be back to normal:
    827:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    1091:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

    Cheers,

First, thanks for your kindly reply.

Second, i dont know how to find hwid as i cant turn on the unit. On the backside label doesn mention.

I downloaded the files you posted, first the 1091 and then tried the 827. Copy to sd.. /garmin put the sd on the unit, turn it on but didnt flash. Tried separately with both files. The same happens:

when in turn on the unit and in seconds shows "loading maps" but stops there and turns off. Seems that the unit doesnt go to read the sd?

on the back side label says 255w 1WM290037 dont know if tells you something.

Thanks in advance if you can help me with another step to try.

Note: opened the unit, unconect the battery for two hours and plug again. same thing happens.

To retrieve your device HWID if you have a backup (must have) go to the Garmin folder and open the file GarminDevice.xml
    You 'll will see a line with :<PartNumber> 006-B0 827-00 </ PartNumber>
    827 is the HWID.
If you dont have a back up (not good), how to get it?
Use the program G7ToWin that can see it in your nuvi in Pre-Boot and show up the HWID.
    g7towinwithhelp.zip (1,3 MB)
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Unzip the program in a folder and run it
Go to the program settings and select USB.

(Thanks Acleite for the pic )
Put GPS in PRE BOOT mode.
Place and hold one finger on the top left corner of the GPS screen and switch it on. (Without taking your finger off the screen even after power-up)
attach the nuvi USB to your pc.
Select the menuGPS -> Get GPS ID'
    l9ebnsm
You have to navigate to get to the good.

Very good explanation by Caty how to find the appropriate HwID for your nuvi.

Sorry, about that but this is not good. If you can't load the FW in Boot mode and also by SD card most probably there is a problem with the memory and the FW can't be loaded on the specific region. On your place I will contact Garmin CS.

If nuvi reboot or power off at Loading maps - 90% it is internal filesystem problem. Damaged maps files, text, gcd or NTFS formatted internal memory

If you cannot load your Nuvi 5000 or 8xx (cyclic reboot with white line)- please write PM to me - I try help you (7 bricked 5000 and 3 860 recovered succesfully).

Once I've seen a device (nuvi 760 with corrupted filesystem, as it appeared later) that couldn't be repaired with cure firmware. I guess this is because a cure firmware still tries to read files from currupted fs. Replacing all occurrences of "0:/" to "1:/" will not always help in this case, because some of file paths are generated like this: sprintf(filename, "%d:/%s", idisk, some_string).
That's why I patched OpenFile (function in firmware that's used for opening files) to open files from 1:/ instead of 0:/ and suddenly it helped Actually, there was no external flash inserted that time, so this patch just disabled opening of any file. The patch can't be made automatically, by signature lookup, because OpenFile changes even in adjacent firmware versions, not to mention different device models. So no patcher released, ask me to make such firmware.

    @ kunix

Will you make one example firmware with patched OpenFile function? For example the firmware for 13xx/14xx.
    Code:

    @ddabcd277
Here is the firmware you've requested. Hope I don't violate any forum posting rules.
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
I don't like the way this firmware works, actually. It doesn't load voice, lang, map files from SD card. And it is crashing when opening SQL database, don't know why. So I've disabled opening databases at all, which is sad and non-portable.
So there is something very important that I'm missing. Maybe SD card is mounted too late.
