Hi there, first time poster here.
Is there any benefit to updating firmware via downloading it like this compared to using Garmin Express?

    Cheers,
    Selphie

G'day selphie. welcome to GPS Power. Perhaps think about making your second post as an intro in Members Presentation. Click the link in my signature to get there.

If you have the actual device or at least a copy of it's GarminDevice.xml to put in a Garmin folder of a usb stick [a 'fake' or 'stunt double' nuvi], then no you don't need this method. But if you don't have access to an actual device you need the firmware for then this is another way to get it. Read here too: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] [note post #9 there also].

Hi Neil, thank you for explaining... Can you clarify a bit more on what you may mean with a "stunt double" nuvi? I would understand someone doing this to maybe create a firmware backup, though can a person actually create a usable device with the firmware without the actual Garmin unit the firmware is for?
Also thank you for the tip, I'll post something in the intro thread.

No, you definitely cannot use it as a device. It's main purpose is only to download the main firmware [unit software] but can be used to get other items such as Voice files and minor updates for other functions, even map updates.

As for how it's done, from the device's Garmin folder make a copy of the file named 'GarminDevice.xml' and put it on a usb device in a root folder named 'Garmin' [x:\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml]. GarminExpress and WebUdater will treat it as the device and download latest firmware to it as GUPDATE.GCD. Depending on the age of your device that'll be in the Garmin folder or a newly created .System folder of the media. Note that it will only download the CGD file if the XML shows a lower versions software than what's available. To download the same current file as is already loaded to the device, let's say it's Version 8.30, change the version in the XML to '820': Change <SoftwareVersion>830</SoftwareVersion> to <SoftwareVersion>820</SoftwareVersion>. You'll find that string near the start of the file or search for 'SoftwareVersion'.
