Default G’day – Starting quest to load Garmin maps on smartphone

    Hello,

Found you guys after wondering if I could use garmin maps on a smartphone as not to use data, specifically the Costa Rica Navsat map and perhaps play around with others. Planning an extended stay in CR and rather not have a standalone GPS but also want the best maps available with all or more than their intended functionality. I'm sure just loading the map on a garmin is the easiest but if I don't loose much I rather not as I like to travel light. Don’t have any real technical knowledge but am pretty good at following a recipe.

Plan on buying a used phone (somewhat price conscious) that allows me to load garmin maps. LTE would be nice as I think it is arriving in CR this year and the ability to use as a hotspot is key and obviously a very good GPS reviever. So far I think I’ve eliminated the windows OS as the only one I would be interested in is the Lumia 900 as I gather that’s a hard nut to *****. That leaves iOS and android.

Only iOS phone I would be interested in is the 4 and on the android side early contenders are the Galaxy Note 1 (SGH-T879) or Galaxy SII (Skyrocket - SGH-I727 or SGH-I777). No hesitation about jail breaking and rooting. Having the most up to date OS is also not a concern.

Other than adding some acquired maps to a TomTom it’s whole new world, so please - any recommendations or suggestions are sincerely appreciated.

    Jet

Best place to start is always in the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], scroll down to 'Garmin on phones'. Some more suggested reading for iphone: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]; for android: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and [Only registered and activated users can see links. ].

I dont want to brust your bubble but your most likely not going to be successful as it seems that garmin has implemented a authentication check into even hte older programs unless im missing a setup to prevent authentication. Ive tried most versions posted in that thread.
Ive been working on this myself personally with a no map version so I can possibly load my inland lakes hotspot maps which isnt made by garmin anymore, but replicates the printed hotspot fishing maps for the entire country so I dont have to bring a laptop in the boat with me. I do have a garmin edge unit that Ive loaded them on and they work but I would prefer a bigger screen for discussions and when pointing out objects and paths to the driver. Ive tried IMGOSM with no luck so Ive been working with the 2.2.1 IPA for the past week or so with no luck at getting it past authentication.

Actually this may help you further as I just spotted it myself ill test it later
