Now seriously: If it is possible to deal with Garmin's locking schemes (see gimgunlock), why shouldn't it be possible to convert NT version .img files into non-NT .img files?

It's a bluff. This way you can reverse engineer the pseudo-NT only!

Can MPC not make a NT map? Or is working version MPC not available?
The many year ago a non-NT maps was proprietary! But John Mechalas decode it on enthusiasm only. And gone-gone - cGPSmapper, GPSMapEdit and so on...

I'm not sure if this is OT here?
I note that the new Garmin Aus & NZ Topo v4 IMG files are all non NT.

A quick experiment here and I now have all of NZ working in Oruxmaps.
For those proficient: IMG > MapSource > Part NZ IMG (c100x100Km) > GPSMapEdit > MP > IMG + add TYP file to same folder in OruxMaps > Repeat for next part.
    Time to experiment further. (-:

PS Edit - Even easier: Tested working OruxMaps v5.0b25 - Complete IMG > MapSource > NI 221MB & SI 310MB seperate IMG files.
