It seems to me what Garmin has a share of commercial guile. It is more 478x than 276Cx!!! The same price that is very high - 799 USD as for GPSMAP 478 to opposite of 500 USD for GPSMAP 276C. GPSMAP 276C was the very quick and high customizable device with affordable price. In Russia it will go on sale with a price of not less than 1000 USD. In this case I would choose a combination of used rugged notebook from famous manufacturer in very good condition with relatively big screen and a one of eTrex models! Or even the choice from Drive, DriveSmart 60/70 (with Alex patch for JNX) and eTrex give me spare cash on mileage of additional adventures...
Love your wife? Buy yourself a GPS for answering to her favorite question: "Dear, where are you?".

[*] First impressions - it's that old school device. All the same.
    Currently known issues:
    [-] Price.
[-] Heavy, pity to say. Almost impossible to hold it in one hand and press buttons - backside triangle form now vs antenna as a holder in old 276.
[-] Not compatible with sonar. Maybe they consider to improve this. Marine mode still there.

Don't wet yourself with excitement yet sport. It'll leave you lighter by near a grand US. Spilled beer money for me but big bikkies for a starving NY art school dropout living in a logcabin garret in AZ.
You might need a second mortgage. I'll work out "mate's rates" fer ya!

You're wrong about the affordable price part, Giomen. I've had the 276C since it first came out. I remembered it was over $600 PLUS the required accessories, but here it shows what the actual prices were:

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

List price $747...and I expect the new one should come down in price from list too

256 MB Garmin proprietary memory card "now under $150"...later I also bought the (expensive) 512 MB card when it came out.

It doesn't say the price of what they call an "optional" speaker/charger cable that you had to buy so that there would be any sound, as in directions. I assume the new one doesn't require this and has built in sound that is, I hope, loud enough, but I didn't notice that addressed in the review. That was a review from a motorcycle perspective and he said it had bluetooth for headsets which a motorcyclist might want but not me. So that speaker/charger cable was probably about $60

So say the 276C sold for $650 +150 for the memory +60 for the speaker = $860 - and then you needed to buy their maps because it had no maps except for the crude basemap! And a dashboard mount, tho it came with a mount which didn't seem at all useful to me. So $860 plus maps etc. in 2004 money. Nope, "affordable price" was not one of its selling points.

I hope they've improved the mechanics of the buttons. I returned my first - actually my second, because the early ones had a problem with the cable attachment breaking whenever the cable was removed, so they replaced that one - when the buttons became too creaky to use, and the buttons are becoming creaky again, and quite unusable if it is cold until they warm up, plus the white labels are wearing off, and pathetic as it is I still sometimes forget which is which and have to look at the labels.

Anyway it turned out to be great and I'm still using it daily after 12 years, and I'm familiar with its functions (except for the - duh - buttons) since I even had the 176 before (and other Garmins going back to model 2). I saw a youtube review of it in Dutch. I guess they are selling it first in Europe. I'll wait for some reviews when they start selling it here (didn't see any projected date), and for them to fix early bugs, and see what the price comes down to,

Good old Amazon US, taking pre-orders when Garmin don't even have it listed on their own US website yet. Still, 800 bucks isn't too bad if that's the RRP. The discount stores will slice that if it is full-freight.
Funny the Garmin Portugal site has it at 799,99€ and Amazon US has it for the same but in dollars. 1€ is about $1.12 at today's conversion so it should be more like $900 in the States. Let's gouge the Europeans, they'll never know! $800US puts it almost $1100AU here. Or about 5 x dozen boxes of my favourite red so i think i'll pass.
