Ah well, enough mirrors for the raster map now!

Ok .. bear with a n00b ... raster and vector versions

Do you use both at the same time? Or is one preferable on a garmin device?

If both maps are stored together, you can have both maps active to see the raster map and navigate with vector map. However, the raster map traditionally has a lot of data, so your device has a lot to process. Pan & zoom can take a while and with quick movement, the map display may lag behind.

Due to the differences in technology of raster and vector maps, it is not possible to have routing functionality on raster maps without a vector map active in the background (e.g. like the Discoverer map series). So at least the vector map should always be active!

Garmin raster maps are used only on compatible devices.

With special thanks to member p!xeldealer, who provided most of this information in various posts in the Topo Swiss v3 thread.
