Therefore a so-called 'just under 2GB' image file won't fit on a so-called '2GB' SD card which at best probably only has about 1.86GiB of usable space [~1,998,500,000 bytes]. The rule of thumb is that if the unit's internal memory is FAT16 then it cannot see an image 2GiB or over even if capable of reading FAT32 SD cards, such as 3x0/6x0 nuvi series are for instance. Those old units cannot use this unicode map effectively though of course, the EU non-unicode is the map for them.

Most image files posted with the claim that they are 'under 2GB' are in fact usually just under 2GiB and therefore need to go on a 4'GB' card. Microsoft still uses the original binary meaning of KB/MB/GB/TB etc which is that 1KB is 1,024 bytes [2 to the power of 10]; 1MB is 1KB x 1024 = 1,048,576 bytes [2 to the power of 20]; 1GB is 1MB x 1024 = 1,073,741,824 bytes [2 to the power of 30]; 1TB is 1GB x 1024 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes [2 to the power of 40]. So in Properties it will report quite correctly [in binary] that your 1GB card has only ~938MB or ~0.916GB, a 2GB has ~1.84GB, a 4GB card has ~3.72GB, and an 8GB has ~7.39GB in usable space only.

It's also possible to format a 4GB [~3.72GiB] card in FAT16 so that very old units such as StreetPilots which can't see FAT32 can read them and use an image up to 2GiB [2,147,483,647 bytes] instead of being limited on a 2GB card to an image of ~1.86GiB [~1,998,500,000 bytes]

Size card depends on the manufacturer. Example cards of 32GB, it can be the difference of 400MB

Thanks for replies regarding this, thats why I asked about certain brands. I know that some hold more data than others.
So a 2gb release is rather misleading. It wont fit on a 2gb SD card but will fit on a 4gb one. But if I use a 4gb one then I could use the full release on it instead of the 2gb one. I really dont see the point in a 2gb release then.

That's absolutely NOT the point of my post. Every '2GB' card has less than 2,000,000,000 bytes available capacity and that can vary between same sized cards even of the same brand which is also interesting, but immaterial to what japseye was trying to do i.e. put an almost 2GiB image file on a 2GB card:

What is the actual map coverage of the 2GB post #32 (CN Europe NTU 2015.10 West & Central_Unlocked) Theres a link to coverage but it explains nothing.
Perhaps you didn't understand what the ~ symbol means in my post, it means approximately or thereabouts to indicate that the sizes are examples only.

The variance in 2GB cards is not great, and usually much less than 100 MB in 4GB cards anyway, but 'no brand' cards can really cheat you. The main thing is that they never have the fully decimal 2GB of 2,000,000,000 bytes anyway because there is info hard coded during manufacture, even if the card had the full 2GB to start with [none ever do]. The near 2GiB images you are seeking are usually made to just under the 2GiB FAT16 limit as I stated. Some uploaders make even smaller images which they state will fit on a 2GB card, but because of the variance as pointed out even if they fit on some they may not fit on another. Best to just use 4GB cards with early nuvi 3x0/6x0 because they can only see an image of less than 2GiB, but if you have something later it can see up to a 4GiB image file on larger cards. Afaik, you can't even buy 2GB cards from retailers anymore [maybe on eBay still]. 4GB are smallest where i shop anyway.

Same problem for almost 4GiB image on a 4GB card though, as with almost 2GiB on 2GB card.

I noticed in the ASR+2 folder post #42 there are x2 extra automatic speech recognition files! what are those extra's? & does the ASR+2 work with both 3790 & 3790>40 mod?
Plus will there be .db files coming for the SQLite folder?
    Thanks

The ASR2 files in post #42 are for 34xx. Your 3790 unmodded uses ASR1, if you convert to 3490 it will then of course use ASR2.

.db file is available. Prominently at the base of Post #1:

Best stick with non-unicode EU 2014.40 to be safe. I concude from your question that you're using MapSource to compile an image. Sorry to say, MS is not fully compatible with large CN and Topo maps, so better to use MapInstall for them. To answer your question though, if the map is routable anyway [as this one is] that field will be automatically greyed out in MS anyway.
Thanks for the hint. With 2014.40 it worked. So I have to wait for the NT release.

Next non-unicode CN EU will be 2015.20 in August. Only two releases a year now for it.
