MS compiles img files somewhat differently and because it may create tiny errors in the resultant image, it's just not suitable to use with modern map files. Go to the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and you'll find plenty of links to help you, even with MS.
I have unlocked the map. In Mapsource Manage Map Products, the map is now shown as "Not Lockable".
I managed to create the gmapsupp.img using mapsource and load it to my SD card and fit it into my Garmin Nuvi 255W. Upon Nuvi startup, I got the message "Can't Unlock Maps" Is the img file locked or unlocked?

The best advice for you really is to suggest that you'd be better to do it all over again using BaseCamp/MapInstall, but i guess now that you made an image using MapSource you may as well just run [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] on it or use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] to ensure it's fully unlocked.

If you look in Garmin folder/GarminDevice.xml ,you'll see listed all the files and their naming&paths-
You need the CN *img + new gmaptz.img. No addition files for Montana, they are not supported.
