No, you don't lose DEM (it's incorporated in the maps) and autorouting also functions.
Since Mapsource doesn't support Active Routing you'll have to use Basecamp or your GPS for that.
Put the img and the SQL folder in a Garmin folder on SD (or in a connected GPS) and you can use Active Routing in Basecamp.
The only thing you lose by splitting an img for Mapsource is the ability to search for POI.

There is no official Mapsource version, only an img as download or on SD card.

    thx mapperoni.
is there any way not to lose the search for poi, once split the map? use other tool to split?

You mean that Garmin does not publish an installable version for Basecamp?

Mapsource is discontinued, Topo maps are made to be seen in Basecamp, MS cant handle fine new Topo maps.
Mapsource cant handle fine even new City Navigators.
Actually there is no PC install version for Topo Spain, but probably we will have DVD version soon. But DVD version will be to be installed on PC in Basecamp.
GmapTool cant convert MDR file from img to a readable format for Mapsource ,so in splitted map address search wont work. Not sure search by POIs wont work. You can test.

Caty is right, POI search does work but address (or City) search is lost.

Garmin doesn't mention a DVD version on their website.
