Are you running "the full CX 2014.10 with the CN 2014.20 with only the one you're using selected"?

    @capn
It does depend on what unit as to how the CX displays in Map Info, and the various combinations for various device series is explained in the Garmin link [refer [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]]. Sometimes de-delecting the CN can still produce problems but it's rare. That's when you need to revert to separate media cards for the CX & CN.

The biggest mistake users make is to use non-matching versions of the small [MMR only] cityXplorer and City Navigator. For instance teaming small 2014.10 CX with an earlier or later version City Navigator. Although that's a common problem it's not covered in the Garmin info because Garmin doesn't produce any 'small' CX map without it's own CN data in the file.

Thanks for the tip for using an external battery pack for CX use. I suspect the main reason Garmin didn't include pedestrian mode in the new 2013 devices is because of their very short battery charge life. Another useful way to extend the battery time is to turn the display brightness right down when you don't actually have to refer to the screen, like walking a long street or when on public transport you can even turn the unit off.
I cannot let your info about being in an 'ummmmm' neighbourhood in Amsterdam go without comment. I guess once you got where you were going it didn't involve much walking .....

Yeah, I know the expected behavior (and of the expected possible glitch), but experimenters often seem to come up with unexpected results :-)

And being too lazy/time-challenged to experiment on it myself, especially since you already provided me with a working solution (I'm happily running full CX .10 & CN .20, selecting as needed) -- I'm curious to hear what axxxtw found ...

(The fact that I also picked up CX to get the Chicago maps just drew my attention to axxxtw's posts and piqued my curiosity even more.)

I am no scientist; to the contrary. More like a "knobtwister" which is the title my good friends in the 2ndMob gave me. Not being a scientist means I don't take notes. That always becomes a problem as I have to re-learn what I already taught myself. Here's the deal here:

After reading the last several posts, I went to "experiment" on the Nuvi 1300 I have. I fully expected CX 2013.10 to be working. It was not. shock. one thing after another I tried (except unlocking the regular way: I did try to unlock (and in fact thought I had) using the Fast IMG unlocker 2.1 given that, *I think* it was what I tried the very first time. What?! No city streets in Chicago or transit and no EPM? Where'd they go? Tried one thing after another. Got it to work in this fashion:

Stored on the main drive of the Nuvi is the 2013.20 for the lower 49. On the 4 gig sd card I have CX for Amsterdam; an unlock file with .unl as file extension; Navsat 6.4 (Costa Rica); FullCXNA 2014.10; and Benelux 2014.20 (soon to be .30). The best I can figure is the problem started when I disabled the CX map for Amsterdam by re-naming it Amsterdam.img.old and renamed the unlock file to Amsterdam.unl.old . I also renamed Benelux with a .old file extension.

When I renamed the Amsterdam CX map to the .img extension and also the Benelux map to the .img file extension, and also the .unl for the city map of Amsterdam back to .unl, public transport (EPM) came back and so did my walking routes (and public transit routes) within Chicago and I expect all the other cities on the larger map offered.

I shall leave it to the scientists to figure out why it works this way, but working it is.....

EDIT: Perhaps "things" "work" because I already have an unlock file on the SD card for the CX Amsterdam map? I have just created an unlock file for the USA CX map and redacted the "old" Amsterdam unlock file to .bak file extension. The ONE unlock file works for both maps. Is this action common? (Oh...yes...capn....I am using the unit in simulated mode and NEITHER the CN map for the USA or the Benelux map are checked....only the two CX maps are checked.).

@capn: Question: I get a walking route which can include busses on the Nuvi 1300: I get no "EL" or METRA stops; just busses. (In fact when my starting point was the Wilmette, IL Linden CTA station I was only permitted to take the Purple line "EL" into the city and then had to bus it to Midway Airport. The correct route is Linden Purple Express to the City and then Orange line (EL) all the way to Midway....no busses. Are you getting "EL" and METRA stops?

Further, you ask "Are you running "the full CX 2014.10 with the CN 2014.20 with only the one you're using selected"? Or have you found another working combination? I need to UNCHECK the CN2014.20 for EPM to work on the Chicago map.

However, I'm confused because the "full" CX map of USA does not require an unlock "key" (file)....or does it?

Yet another edit add due to "experiment". The CX full (NA) file will not work with my Nuvi 1300 unless I have an unlock "key"/file in there. Doesn't matter whether it's the A'dam key or one freshly made for the CX full (NA). I had read the entire thread before I began posting and I did read all of post 8. There are a couple of what appear to be contradictions within this thread or I'm just too tired to make the distinctions. Too, I had the read the instructions on unlocking. I'm confused beyond a reasonable doubt at this time given post 27 is directing no unlock file is needed?

Well, I'm no expert either, but I read a lot ...

The CX maps require an unlock code to unlock the enhanced (pedestrian/public transport/etc) routing.
Fast IMG unlocker will not unlock the enhanced data.
Furthermore, the FID on the enhanced data must be changed to (eg 800) to bypass GMA locking.
Then an unlock code (UNL file) can be generated to unlock it.
The unlock code ties the map to a specific device or SD card.

The underlying street (display) map portion of a CX map can be unlocked with Fast IMG Unlocker (as has been already done on the maps available here).

While it hadn't occurred to me, it doesn't surprise me that the UNL file for the Amsterdam map would also unlock the Chicago map -- if they were both files that had had the FID changed to 800.
(The new, slightly surprising observation is that the device probably doesn't care what the name of the UNL file is, it reads the UNL file and now knows that any FID-800 images are unlocked to it. Viva experimentation!) .
(I'm not sure if there are any problems in having multiple maps with the same FID available or available and selected ... but apparently you have both CX Amsterdam and CXNA successfully available, both with FID-800. Again, viva experimentation!)

The requirement to unselect CNNA to enable CXNA is as expected. (The experiment confirms expectations!)

I'll have to get back to you in a couple of days about EL/METRA routing, my Nuvi isn't at hand right now.

No, that's not what i said in Post #27:

You have the full CX 2014.10 and only the MMR components need have the FID 800. All else including the NT parts still have the original FID 2920 but they are unlocked. If they were locked, there would be a capital "L" following priority of "30" for the locked parts. e.g. Houston would appears as:

    I1136F74 NT 18818609 1 1252 30 L 1 2920 HOUSTON, TEXAS

You may have it loaded with any version of CNNT other than 2014.10 provided you don't have them both selected at the same time. Check only the one you're using at the time. That info is in post 21 immediately above your initial post here.
What i said there is clear i would think, I didn't say no unlock file is needed: The NT parts etc have the original FID and are unlocked. The MMR parts with FID 800 still need the *.unl file for EPM to function work [but the last part is left unsaid]. The user i was answering clearly understood that by his earlier posts, so there was not a need to restate it at the time.

As to why your Chicago map worked with an unlock file named differently i can't say. I haven't tried that, the convention has always been for the *img & *unl files to be named the same and I believe that to be the case. I'll try and report my results.

BTW, FIU is good, but slow. Better to use [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] or [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for unlocking images.

@Neil (found by experimentation a while ago)
If you have various Fid 800 City Explorer Maps in your Nuvi only one needs to be unlocked to Fid 800
    eg
    added CX_CT.img (needed unlock) CX_CT.unl
added CX_SP.img (no further unlock needed)
added CX_LND.img (no further unlock needed)

In other words any one of the 3 needs to be unlocked and the file name match for the unlock is important.

Thanks Dasil. It makes sense once i had a chance to think about it and I was just stuck in a rut. The naming convention is a carry over from the pre-3xxx days when the MMR parts could be left with the original FID and you needed separate unlock files for different FID CXs. I've been used to following the convention for identification anyway, but of course as 800 is the common FID for modded CX regardless of whether it's NA, EU, AU etc only one valid unlock file is necessary to unlock all MMR parts.

@Neil: Thanks for all the data, Neil. I'm afraid I'm just not going to "make the grade" relative to many of the folks on the web site, but I'll do my best. As an example, I am still confused by your quote: "You have the full CX 2014.10 and only the MMR components need have the FID 800. All else including the NT parts still have the original FID 2920 but they are unlocked."

Because I am so far behind I keep getting further behind! To me, it says above: "You have the full CX 2014.10 and only the MMR components need have the FID 800. All else including the NT parts still have the original FID 2920 but they are unlocked." To me, that means the one's with the FID800 do NOT require unlocking ; and yet in reality they do require some manner of .unl file

I don't want to waste valuable board space and time with my limitations. Conversation/discussion via text leaves a lot to be desired, really.

    @axxtw

Your full CX NA 2014.10 contains a couple of things:

The street map pieces (equivalent to part of CN NA). Those pieces have FID 2920 and have already been unlocked for all devices.

The MMR (enhanced pedestrian data) pieces. Those pieces have FID 800 and require an unlock code (.unl file) to be used.

    In other words --
The MMR (FID 800) components cannot be globally unlocked -- a .unl file is required to use them
The rest of the map (FID 2920) can, and has already been, globally unlocked -- no .unl file is required to use it

    Clearer?
