    @Viper26
    Welcome to GPSPower. Sounds like very good advice, but i suppose 'switch back to the base map to navigate' is a typo and you mean to switch back to the (Japanese Garmin) detail map to navigate.

    PS: I merged your 2 posts for you, all you need do if you forget something is to use the 'Edit Post' button to add more. (Consecutive posts are a bit like talking to yourself)

    There was a tile with water only.A big one, covering all map.
    Offending tile has been replaced with a dummy one and MD2 subfile removed.

    Yea, however Japanese units are absurdly priced. I speculate it was probably due to the licensing scheme for the Japanese company that publish their own firmware and sell in the Japan.

    being randomly captain obvious, and for those who are not familiar with Japanese addresses and street layouts. It's really hard to try anything in japan, from what I know, phone land lines are typically associated to gps coordinates to help people navigate. Cabbies typically will get lost if you give them just an address, but will find the right place if you give them a phone number.

    Also, I know it's a bit off topic, but have anyone ever successfully used the japanese firmware on an standard US unit?

Another huge plus with the Japanese versions is the ability to search telephone number. So when you use a hybrid of both systems you get the best of both worlds.

    As a junior member I can't really see half of the postings on here so disregard if that has already been posted somewhere.

    @chibipaw
    My personal experience is that generally flashing any Asian fw to most US/EU devices brings more negatives than positives, but mileage does vary. It all depends on how much you might want a certain feature or set of features and if you are prepared to put up with any (inevitable) downsides. Read [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] for an example, and there are others. JN fw is particularly dangerous on a US/EU unit imo.
