If you mean some compressed file can be smaller ,it depends on compressing program used to zip and split the .img (if the .img is splitted)

This is a TOPO map, search is by POIS.
Read at Garmin product page available in post n1:

Offers regional and countrywide coverage for all of France on a DVD and preloaded microSD™/SD™ card
Displays vector-based topographic map data in 1:25,000 scale
Includes new ActiveRouting¹ functionalities that offer tailored and innovative routing recommendations for easy tour planning
Includes searchable NAVTEQ business points of interest (POIs), such as museums and theatres, as well as an additional POI database that includes restaurants, hotels, gas stations, recreational information (paths, trails, shelters, etc.) and more
Displays routable roads, trails and highways in metropolitan and rural areas so getting to your destination is easy by creating point-to-point routes on compatible devices
Shows contour lines and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data
Displays local parks, forests and recreational and wildlife area boundaries as well as FFRP hiking trails, FFC bike trails and mountain huts .

If you need a Routable Map look for a city Navigator map

Does TYPviewer allow a graphical overview of the changes before saving?

My device (Etrex 30) says 'device can not unlock map'
Whats wrong. Downloaded the .img file. It runs fine in basecamp and from a USB stick.
