Regarding the 'Named Trails' search problem in BaseCamp:

It took me a while to figure things out (as I have said before, I am not an expert).
Fortunately, there are much more knowledgeable (and helpful) members on this board.
They found a solution for the 'Named Trails' search problem (with some maps) in BaseCamp much faster (and a better one than I could have found).
Many thanks to pietu (who put in a lot of work to help me), and to all the others who have contributed (in alphabetical order here): Ballebar, bam-bam, catymag, james222, jonnywi, Mapperoni, merlinboy, Rossi4S, sherco40, syzygy.

From my point of view (please correct me if I'm wrong), the preferred sequence of processing an original locked IMG file is:

    1. Remove personal data from the original IMG file with pietu's tool.
    2. Add the lost product number to the file header with sherco40's ImgTool.
    3. Unlock with Wu Yongheng's gimgunlock.

(All these great tools are in the Software & Tools section.)

    IMHO:
1-Remove personal data with Hex Editor, posters should do it always and Hex Editor doesnt modify the map header.
2-Always download original locked maps and unlock by yourself.
2-Unlock with gimgunlock: it doesnt modify neither the header nor remove the product code in header.

    Small addition:

Extraordinary majority of map what distribute in the img format do not have personal data! Especially if file have a flag - Ms 0

In any case no problem to check that. You can parse unlock code from img and you see unit ID=1 or the same as in any other version of this map. Only if you received map generated specially for you by mapsource you have personal data in it.
Garmin, how much is 30 pieces of silver for Judas today? Were they worthy for crucifix of GPSPower?

For experts, these may be stupid questions.
Since I am not an expert, I post them anyway:

    1. What is the Ms flag used for?

    2. What are the possible Ms flag values, and what do these values indicate or determine?

    3. Why do some IMG files contain unlock codes (i.e., why are the unlock codes in the IMG file, not just in a separate .unl file)?

    4. Is a separate .unl file required, even if an IMG file contains an unlock code?

    5. If a separate .unl file is still required, do the unlock codes in the IMG file and in the separate .unl file have to be identical (or can they be different, yet both valid unlock codes for a given GPS unit or SD card)?

    6. What software product puts the unlock codes in the IMG files, and when (or under what conditions) does it do so?

    7. Why and when (or under what conditions) does an IMG file contain more than one unlock code?

In other words: I want to learn more, so that I can better understand what is going on (and avoid posting stupid questions in the future).

I agree (using a hex editor is a good option, because it leaves the rest of the file unmodified).
However, some less experienced users may not feel comfortable with using a hex editor.

Downloading original locked maps (and unlocking by yourself) certainly is best (I think it would be great if more original locked maps were made available here). That way it is possible to keep the original download, and to start over if something does not work out (or if Garmin decides to change something in the future).

Ms flag steers, if map image will be shown in bascamp (or homeport) or not

a flag (in informatics) has always the values 0 or 1
0 determines map will be shown in basecamp
1 determines map will be not shown

Map images from original Garmin SD cards are unlocked for the SD card with them are sold. In this case the unl code is inside the img file.

An .unl file is no more necessary and also not usefully, because it doesn't work for MapIDs >2200. Better use Unlocker like gimgunlock to unlock maps (if they aren't unlocked yet).

If the unlock code would be necessary or useful, it has to be valid for the device - it's irrelevant, if it would be inside or in .unl file. It would be also irrelevant, if inside or in .unl file are more than one codes - only one code must be valid.

All questions about unl codes are irrelevant :D. But if you want to know it absolutely: it is possible to write valid codes for more than one device into the map img or one img file can contain tiles of more than one map - so for every MapID would be necessary a valid code.

Maps built by Mapsource in your pc have flag 1 in header and Basecamp looks for that flag and doesnt display them coz they should be already installed on pc in Mapsource.

Can this Ms flag be changed (e.g., with GMapTool, or with some other software)?

The other way round, maps created by MapSource have Ms=1, that's why they are not shown in BaseCamp.

    @GPSFranz
Yes with GMAptool you can change Ms flag. Activate Expert Options and then you find in register [Write] the line Version in Header, where you can set 0 in the box behind Ms.
